I'm thinking of modifying a common cast iron wood working clamp to a mild steel bracket that I can bolt to a pre threaded hole in my 1/2 inch thick table top. How do I weld the clamp to a piece of mild steel? I have a miller diversion 165 and a 110 mig.
Reply:Lots of cheap clamps will not weld well. You will find that as soon as you start applying real pressure they will crack right next to the weld line. Better made clamps seem to do better with things like this. Probably cast steel rather than some cast mystery metal.Neither of your machines are really the right tool for the job. If anything I'd V out the attachment point real well and then probably tig it. Usually for cast you want a nickel based rod, not cheap. If you have an O/A rig brazing might be a better way to go..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
