Hello Welders,It's been a while since I have posted. So I bought a tig welder a while back and built a folding table ( used mig and stick for that ) to teach myself the new process.I read a lot of documentation and watched a lot of online videos and decided it was time to get under the hood.I had practiced on some scrap and kind of got the hang of keeping an arc lit, working the foot pedal, grinding the tungsten and all that.So I thought it was time to start welding a bunch of coupons to better hone my tig welding skills but after thinking about it for a while, I decided to just build something instead and practice as I went along.I bought a hand held bandsaw and have been wanting to make a stand for it so that became my coupon substitute project.I looked at some of the designs available here and on other sites and settled for one I saw on Jody's Tips and Tricks website.I modified it slightly and came up with the design you see below.I basically formed a "C" out of some 1 1/4" square tubing to fit snugly around the saw and then cut the top off to create a lid for removing the saw from the stand.I then fabricated a bolt and threaded insert combination, with some alignment tabs, which allows the top to telescope back into the bottom portion and be held in place there.I then cut some short 3/16 rod pieces and spaced them around the stand to keep the saw centered within it. I slipped some rubber hose over the rods on one side to prevent marring the saw and to provide some spring effect to hold the saw snugly. After that, I welded some 1/8" thick tabs on the bottom to duplicate the bolt pattern of my vise so it can be interchange with either of the leafs I insert into the receivers in the table. And lastly, I cut a slot in a piece of 1/8" stainless plate and drilled it to match the saw's bump-stop to make a small table surface to work on.So, most of the welds came out OK, there was some under cut and I even had to grind a couple out and try again but now I have a useful saw stand instead of a bunch of coupons stuck together. However, I noticed my HAZ was wider than I thought it should have been so I was probably moving too slow, perhaps some coupon time would still be beneficial. Thanks for looking, George Attached Images

Reply:I like that design. Way more form than I would have done and looks like it functions well too.Looks like it has a firm grasp of the saw.Nice work! You going to paint it?GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Nice job!   Bob
Reply:Nice job. What do think of your TIG machine?

Reply:I like it.  More in depth than needed but there were a lot of different joints to practice on and in the end you have something useful not just a pile of coupons.  Get some paint on it before it rusts!
Reply:gfmoul> I’m not all that fond of portaband saws…. I’ve found them to be heavy and extremely cumbersome to use but…. I’d try one again if it was anchored well like yours. Good work. Thank you for all the blow by blow photos of how you created it…. much better than just a photo of a completed project. Oh…. and I like your welding table too.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Originally Posted by BD1This is way too easy. Look , you could even do it !      Yours looks like a temporary mount just to try it and then could never find time to change it. Hey, it works and is simple.
Reply:Thanks to all for the nice comments.Gravel - No I don't think I am going to bother with painting it, it stay in the garage and seems to doing just fine.Sand Man Red - What do I think of my TIG machine ? It was cheap enough for all the features is has but it has broke down once already requiring a ten week turn around and shipping on me. It has worked fine since I got it back, I'm just a hobbyist welder so I don't really lean on it. I'll leave it at that, I don't want to get the natives restless and have the saw stand post moved to who knows where.Regards,George
Reply:Nice band saw stand.   Thanks for the post
Reply:You must have gotten the only good saw HF sold ,because my friend bought one it lasted two cut's and craped. He got it replaced second one not much better , but his was orange not red.Is it possible HF sells different grades of crap. Any thing I ever got there that had an electric cord on it was junk ,or nearly so.gxbxc
