Reply:The only thing I see as a drawback is that since they clamp at the top of the collet body you lose some useful length  on the tungsten......also you may limited on a short backcap.
Reply:Reverse collets are far from a new design. In fact it's an old design and a very good design at that. They have 4 holes so they provide very good gas coverage. Pair it with a gas lens and you have a good basic setup.Because it grabs at the back your limitation is to a longer tungsten, I believe it has to be 3" at shortest. Being that it grabs at the back it pulls the collet out of the majority of the heat. Because of this you can get a LOT of use out of one of these. I mean YEARS AND YEARS.I have a few to sample for a 17, but switched to a 20 torch so I haven't gotten a chance to use it just yet.Edit: I forgot another very important and cool feature. Since it grabs at the back of the tungsten it's a 1 size fits all. Meaning if you use a standard 17 setup, 17 gas lens setup, pyrex, or stubby kit (stubby uses a short 17 collet) this collet will work for all of the above. Reply:I haven't been using my 20 torch for that long to compare. However I've only really worn out less than 5 collets or less since I have been welding. It would make sense the air cooled torches wear out collets faster because the torch gets hotter than water cooled and keeeps it out of the annealing stage. When the collet is hot and you tighten it, that is when they twist.
