Roll bender capacity ?s

I'm curious about the stated capacity on 3 roll benders, like the picture. It's a baileigh rh-45, and it's stated capacity on flat bar the easy way is 4"x1/2". I find this hard to believe because I've rolled 3"x1/2" Stainless on my harbor freight roller with arm power only. What gives? Attached ImagesIan TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:The simple answer/retort to your rolling of 3" x 1/2" stainless is: To what radius?The not so simple response is how many more times could you do that before wearing out some component.  Industrial equipment is designed to do that all day, every day for a long time between service.
Reply:The ratings on these machines are what you can do consistently, not what you can get away with once in a while. I have a eagle cp30 and we over load it all the time, one time i had  guy trying to roll 1/2 x 3 flat bar the hard way and the top spindle expolded and shot the whole top die, nut and broke axle in to his chest. Good thing it didnt hit his face!

Reply:My guess is the machine's ability to FORCE the material to bend WITHOUT damaging the bearings and the guides. Essentially providing NO feed of the material through the machine. Think of it like a hydraulic press.If you think about it, you could use the weight of a small child to force a bend in 1/3" thick cold rolled plate if the material was long enough and the child just slowly bounced in the center for a couple days. It is bending...no?! What these machines do is induce deflection in a material and the steel's structure  simply "remembers" this as it is passed through over and over.
