Just curious if any other process is capable of producing food grade quality welds on Stainless steel besides tig?
Reply:None that I know of. Reply:Probably about anything. You could splatter on a poo weld as long as you grind it smooth and passivate it afterwards.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:yup, what gyver said. but.... food grade is a really broad term.
Reply:We use a process where I work (pharmaceuticals mostly) that is automated autogenous fusion. Punch in arc machine inc on YouTube and it will pop up. Might as well be tig with no filler. Very repeatable, acceptable weld if you know what your doing
Reply:Food grade refers to a quality level used in the production of product for human consumption. Mainly used in brewing, juice factory, pharmaceutical and bottling plants. It requires 100% fusion of the internal surface of the weld joint. Mostly done on sch 5 stainless steel piping. Reply:After Adams comment, I should mention we typically only use that particular process for tube. Couldnt tell you much about said process for pipe.
Reply:When i was in college a company gave the pipe and instructions on doing food grade sanitary welds for them gas backed, no filler, 100% fusion, flat on the inside, flat on the outside...The inside being most importantTakes practice to get the backing gas flow and pressure just right you taped the hose at one end and tape capped the other end the polked a small hole in that end too much and weld was concaved ...too little and it would be convex ...No sugaringFit up had to be real tight ...no gaps,no burrs,no offsetthey did fiber optic cam inspection of weldsI did it successfully and went and took their welding test and passed ...But the only openings they had were doing installs ...out of state no openings at their fab shop here local ...oh well ...that was years ago...1990 somethingthey did a lot of contract work for coke a cola and campbell's soupBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:@ LeviC - EBW ($$$) and LBW ($$) processes trump the weld quality on SS piping/tubing over the TIG (manual, mechanized/orbital) process. The power density and narrow beam created by the xrays/laser minimizes the weld HAZ and reduces Cr & Ni migration to improve corrosion control.Last edited by ManoKai; 12-07-2015 at 04:31 PM."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi |
