Im going to be welding some planter boxes out of corten and the corten manufacturer says hes heard of people using ER80S-Ni-2 mig wire. I cant find the stuff for sale in my initial online search. I need 10lb spools. Does this sound like the correct wire and does anyone know where to buy it?
Reply:You could use that wire. You are looking for something with a 1% or 2% nickel in it to match the weathering steel. If you are only doing single pass welds on thinner material, it is going to be less of an issue thanks to pickup from the base metal. There are electrodes with a -W classification you can use readily for weathering steels. I know this is common with FCAW and SMAW, but not with solid wire. Go for 80S-Ni1 or 80S-Ni2 if it needs to be solid wire. You may have difficulty finding a wire like this in a 10lb spool though.
Reply:You might look for E80C-Ni1 metal cored wire as well. These can produce the same weld metal chemistry as the solid wire filler metals. The metal cored wires run better in spray transfer, but you can short circuit with them if you need to weld out of position. You might find a metal cored wire on a smaller diameter spool as well. Reply:Thanks. I have a miller 211 fyi.
Reply:Do you have some more information on the boxes? Are the welds holding any kind of weight, single pass, going to be visible?
Reply:ER80-Ni1 is usually recommended for Cor-Ten but not easy to find in 8" reels. Supposedly it is OK to use regular ER70S-6 wire for single-pass welds since the weld will pick up enough alloying agents from the adjacent base metal.Depending on the thickness of the steel you're welding you can also use E8018-C3 stick electrodes which are available in 10 lb. cans.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:Originally Posted by scramblerjI responded but it didnt post. They are 1/4" planter boxes, so no weight just a box, single pass welds will be hidden on the inside but wanted the option incase they need to be exposed. I got a quote for $125-133 for a respooled 10-11lb roll, and I passed. Ill prob just use 70s6 unless I find a cheaper roll. Let me know if anyone sees an affordable 10-11lb roll. |
