1st of many newbe questions.I just bought a Hobart Handler 190 as my 1st welder. It says the max thickness is 5/16" I have a 2 metal blocks 1/2" thick being bolted together on a grinder I am building. The bolts will do all the holding I need but there is a bit of play in the fit of the 2 pieces. After I have them bolted in position for good can I use my welder in a few spots to "lock it in place"? Reply:For alignment purposes a tack weld or two will work fine.ChrisAuction Addict
Reply:Yeah just for a grinder, your welder will do just fine.  Turn up the "voltage" (heat) on it to "way up."Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:Indeed, it will weld over 5/16 but keep an eye on your duty cycle chart, no sense overheating it.
Reply:Thank you all. Your answers confirmed what I guessed to be correct. I feel better knowing for sure. I just picked up my 1st bottle of gas. I went with a 150 cu ft 75/25 mix. It should last me a long time.Tom F.Hobart Handler 190 mig gunWilton Vise Restoration
