I lease my oxy / acet. cylinders yearly.  I just paid my yearly lease - $72 for a 145 cu./ft. acet. and 242 cu. ft. oxygen bottle.3 weeks ago I exchanged an empty acetylene bottle and it cost $43.85.  I don't know what an exchange on the oxygen tank would cost - it's been quite a while since I emptied one out but it seems like it was only around $25 - and that's been almost 4 years ago.Kinda tells how much I use my own torch - I use the one at work as much as possible and another guy's stuff as well.  Most of the work I do for him anyhow so he can foot the bill for consumables.Around here, if you own a set of bottles, it's quite a trip to get them refilled if anyone will even do it for you.  Most places here now require a yearly lease on tanks, and no longer honor the "lifetime lease" many guys paid for years ago.
Reply:After 2 years, you could own a bottle.  Bottles here are selling for 150-200 a piece.

Reply:It's a way to lock you into the supplier.I own mine, and have long since recovered the cost.  Supposedly owner bottles can be filled anywhere, but I've never tried. Probably be a disaster.  It's good ol' boys makin' a buck.In all these years I maybe got two bottles with good seats on them.  Have to just about stand on the wrench to seat the regulator nipple.  Valves with no handles are fun tooEven got an empty once.  Got back to the house, cracked the valve to blow the crap out before attaching the regulator............................ZIPPO, NADA, ZILCH.  20mi round trip to fix that lil' problem.  Not even a good "Gee sorry" from the supplier."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I have prolly screwed myself, but I own 2 argon, 1 75/25, and 1 oxygen.  All have been swapped by Airgas.  So even though I owned the original tanks, all my tanks say Airgas on them now.  I figure when I move they are all going with me, but I may or may not have trouble on the other end getting them filled.  I don't know....
Reply:I just called Airgas for a price on cylinder rental.A one year lease is $57.50 + $75 deposit, unless a charge account is opened.A 5 year lease is $165 per cylinder.  They also told me they "split" the gas cost for new customers renting bottles.  I asked about getting personally owned bottles filled, and was told you must be able to prove ownership.  In other words, if I bought a set of bottles at an auction with another company's name on them, I'd be screwed.
Reply:Well here on Long Island $$$$ talks, I bought some old bottles privatley and I traded them in for full bottles the only extra charge is $25.oo or $30.00 for retesting the out of date bottles, and no hassle on who owned them...and the new indate bottles can be filled just for gas cost, I just traded an old argon 300cft bottle 16 yrs out of date, it cost $70.00 fer gas $30.oo for test. I aint complaining
Reply:They have a nice little racket going here in minnesota, I'm not sure one can get a owner bottle filled, anywhere.... I paid $120?????for a five year rental, i think it was a 90cf bottle. I actually gave away my other bottle, was worthless to me....
Reply:I guess it all boils down to liability, but most likely profitability.  I really don't know why any type of gas bottle would be any different than a propane tank for a grille that's found in nearly every U.S. household.  Just imagine if the propane companies discovered a way to rent 20 lb. cylinders!!
Reply:I use airgas or praxair to fill my bottles (I own them). I have never been asked to prove ownership. I just go down and they swap them out for filled ones. If they are out of date it's just another fee. Sounds like some of you guys are geting screwed. I wounder if the leased bottles have certain markings that tell the filler they are leased?Lee HurlbuttUpland [email protected]

Reply:I am SO amazed at the regional differences in cylinder polices.  I have about 10 cylinders, from O2, Acetylene, 4 of CO2, Nitrogen, 25-75 mix  and a couple of more.  I have had 0 problems with my airgas supplier.  I used to drive 60 miles to the big city to exchange cylinders as they didn't care about expiration dates.  "It's the price of doing business" they said, and exchanged everything I brought.  I found one cylinder 1/2  buried in the dirt at a flea market business.  Another one, a friend just gave to me.  If it wasn't what I wanted, they converted it to what I needed.A couple of years ago one of out local supply stores was bought out by Airgas.  Now I have the same deal here in town.  They even make a deal.  Once I had a couple of small cylinders with no screw on safety cap.  That made me nervous, so I took them to my dealer.  I offered to swap the two for a little larger cylinder with the safety cap.  He said "OK,  if you will pay for the gas".  My billfold was out, right away.Later I wanted a cylinder for a small Millermatic 90.  The store called and said they had a couple, and if I wanted to buy one for $90, they would keep the other one at the store as a 'trade-in'.  I said, "Better yet, I'll buy both of them and I don't care how long it takes you to get one filled"As I read what goes on in other parts of the country, I feel really lucky.

Reply:I own all my bottles, never leased one before.  I have bought new bottles at Airgas as well as bought used bottles from private sellers.  I take the bottles to Airgas to either exchange for bottles they've already filled, or have mine filled.  Either way, I still own them.  My local Airgas is very good about taking bottles in exchange with other company's names on them.  As long as the test date is good and it's not obviously a rental bottle, they will fill it or exchange it without question.  If it's out of date, they charge a small test fee on the exchange.  I can and have exchanged bottles up or down in size, as my needs dictate.  They either charge me the difference for a bigger one or credit me the difference for a smaller one.  Airgas has been very easy to deal with on filling/exchanging bottles.  I have exchanged to different type of bottle or different gas inside same type of bottle without problems either.  I either pay or get credited the difference in price.I have 4 bottles on the truck and about 10 bottles in the shop with different gasses, mostly inert shield gasses and one set of oxy/acet in shop and oxy/propane on truck.Last edited by DesertRider33; 06-22-2010 at 09:44 AM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:To the OP - I have asked my Praxair about filling tanks and they told me they will not fill the big "K" or "T" bottles, those have to be leased. They will fill the smaller ones. What you can do is buy more smaller ones so you can own them and just get them filled, or there are two private suppliers who will fill or exchange without a lease. Unfortunately they are not close to palestine (). One is in Bridgeview and the other Cicero. PM me if you need more info."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:around here there is only 1 welding supply shop! I refuse to deal with them! they have been gouging since I first checked prices as a teenager. & still do.I have 3 options, 1 is drive 75 or so miles to a welding store competitor, of my local LWS, which is my primary source, or 75 miles to their sister store which treats people fairly, but I dont normally go there unless the other place is out of something I need, or what I do most of the time, a local mom & pop small independent grocery / hardware store carries some supplies from the competitor in the town where I go to get supplies. but they actually buy the stuff & resale it higher, but still alot cheaper then my LWS, but anything I need I can place an order & get it within a week, so I wont have to drive 150 mile round trip.I use HOLOX & have had great service, even through their name change from Sunnox. as for National welders...... thats what is in my town....... but the branch in another town is great, & every other welding supply store has been good to me.just not my local..... oh well..........I have never had them check a date stamp. but I do get tanks filled 8 or so times a year.. & I own 2 ox & 2 acetelene tanks 1 set are 40 cf & the other is around 80 cf, I have to look, not used lateley as I normally use my small portable tanks.Randy
Reply:at my lws they use different sizes for rental and owner tanks I own my oxy act co2 argon and argon tanks but when you go in they just swap you for another tank no questions if they are out of owner tanks they give a rental but you need to make sure next time you get an owner tank its a small comapany in a small town so they know most of their customers and know who has whatVictor torch Lincoln Idealarc DC 250 Lincoln LN 7 wire feederMilller WC 200 spool gunLincoln Idealarc 250 ac/dcColosal Tech Cut 50

Reply:I own the largest bottles that I am told that I can own, around 90 cu ft, have never had a problem, although I usually use the same supplier.  It is just an exchange, simple and fast.My last oxygen fill, 92 cu ft, cost me $20, including all taxes and fees, at my LWS, which is independent.  Argon, 92 cu ft, cost me $35 plus tax and fees.  Airgas charges more, last time I checked. Now that I hear what you guys are paying for leases, I am very happy I own the bottles.  I know that I could probably get gas cheaper in larger bottles, but my usage is low enough that any savings on gas would be eaten up by lease fees.   I had leased a large tri-mix tank for a stainless project, but returned it when the project was over; they just charged me a few dollars a month, so that worked out well.  RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge

Reply:I don't know the technical of it but its argon for tig. The bottle is about 5' tall last me about 11 months. 35.00 refill 6.00 a month rental.
Reply:I just paid $25 for a 150 cu ft. oxygen tank and $70 for a size 4 acetylene tank with 125 cu ft. in it in Grand Rapids MI. I own my tanks and get them filled at Airgas. my oxy tank with a receipt says Airgas on the collar. the acetylene tank they just swapped me has Airgas stamped on the shoulder. I'm not happy about the names on the tanks with the swap, but I have no problem getting them filled at Airgas with no account. They say all the tanks that go out their door are stamped now. My local Airgas does not fill, only exchanges tanks they get from their main branch. I don't know how they price the gas, oxy is always the same. Previous fill of acetylene the tank had 140 cu ft. and cost me about $90.If I can't fix it it's broke!

Reply:125 cu. ft. argon.  $140 plus haz mat and tax, roughly $166.    I would gladly pay what you guys pay.
Reply:Advanced Welding, the place I posted did my 100% argon 150 for $45.00. That's the best price within a hour of me. No extra charges either. It's interesting how the prices vary and what they wanna tack on for extra costs. They are a small ma/pa supplier.I found them on Craig's list.  Here's the posthttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...01#post3430701

Reply:I started TIG welding in December.  I went to my LWS and asked them about rentals.  It was a deposit of $150 and $7 a month rent.  Three times I asked and it was $7 per month or $84 per year.  I get my first bill and there is an additional $15 hazmat fee on rental tanks.  Why did they not disclose this?  I argued and they called the downtown office and agreed to take my $7.75 and waive the hazmat this month if I return it before February.  This is an additional $15 per month.  There is no hazmat fee on customer owned tanks.  I wonder if there is a "customer owned maintenance fee"?  I better ask.  They will probably add one just after I buy the cylinder.  They are looking for a used 80cuft to sell me.  The fill on the rental tank which is a 150cuft was $35 for argon.  Now I have to find things to weld to use the remaining gas before February.  I am liking flux core MIG more and more all the time.Last edited by bj139; 01-16-2014 at 02:50 PM.
Reply:$15 hazmat / month on the rental? You sure? Usually hazmat isnt charged on a rental, but it is charged when you take the bottle in for exchange.
Reply:$15 hazmat fee is on the printed bill.  I asked at the store and they said what I wrote above.  Maybe they just started this in January and wasn't in effect in December.

Reply:That's what im wondering. If I own my own bottle and I go to Airgas and they switch it for one of there's what then.  I payed for a bottle but I don't owner the one from Airgas they do.Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2you ain't gotta eat it
Reply:I have only ONE NO NAME ON NECK BOTTLE. I haven't had to get it filled yet. My others have NAMES on neck. I think when the time comes for refill I will leave it there for a fill just to have the no name on bottle. A no name tank is always easier to sell too. IF you sell it. It took me forever to find one to buy.     My EXCHANGE tanks have always had a different name on them for each fill..

Reply:I bought a large tri mix for mig welding in dec 13 they gave me a sheet of paper that said name here bought a bottle from supplier on this date. He then went to the full tanks grabbed one and sent it with me. When it's empty I take it back pay for gas and they give me a different one. They said to keep the bottle title as he called it if I went somewhere and they gave me grief. I have not had ant trouble I always pay for gas then we go out back and swap bottles. Like vwguy3 says.I wonder if you really own the bottle or just pay lifetime rent up front?  I paid about $300 for the bottle and $55 or so for the gas.
Reply:Ok so I was pretty much given a o2 tank last night.  It is from tweco and has a permit number on it. Can I get it filled or is the permit number gonna screwed?Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2you ain't gotta eat it
