Like it says above but also what rods are DC specific and how do they perform? My Lincoln AC/DC  was made in Canada, it's a rectangular shape, not like the tombstone box.  This is the first time I've used other than AC arc for welding, I have experience fillet brazing 413 tubing but no fig or mig. Any thoughts and/or link to quality threads on this forum or any where are much appreciated.thanksBrian

Reply:Not a pro, but Lincoln Brand Excalibur 7018 has the best puddle from slag differentiation of any rod I've ever burned.  At least for me the puddle is just easier than with any other rod.  NOT the Home Depot 7018AC rod-to me it's the worst rod I've ever used.  Some say it's great and my distaste for it may be from lack of skill or experience.  That and 6010 and you're set.  6011 will work on AC or DC.
Reply:If you are running horizontal try some 7024 works both AC and DC.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:If you have to shop at box stores, 7014 is a good general purpose rod. I often find it tends to run on small machines better than the 7018 AC that they sell.7018 Excalibur or 7024 are also high on my list, but usually only get used in special applications due to cost and availability..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Once you stick weld with DC+ polarity, you will never stick weld with AC again. I run 2 rods for mild steel, 6010 and 7018. Nothing else.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:7018 is definitely nice, especially the excalibur rods. But excalibur rods are expensive and if they aren't fresh out of the can or stored in a rod oven I find the slag gets to be hard to remove. For non critical work, I really like the 7014 rods. But it all depends on what you are doing. For just messing around, general repairs or sculptures/art work 7014 is hard to beat in my opinion. 6013 are OK and I don't prefer 6010/6011 except in certain situations. I run them all DCEP.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Some 7018 rods wont run AC worth a dam. Mainly Washington alloy. Says they will run AC on the box, but in reality wont run AC at all. Try them on a machine that puts out bad or rough DC, same thing. But when you put them on a machine that makes good DC and they run beautifully.Excalibur will run any which way and the slag usually just falls off.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:Originally Posted by SuperArcI love Washington Alloy (WA) 7024's in 1/8" and 5/32".  They run great on AC.  They're like spreading frosting on a cake, they're so dang smooth.   Their 7024's are definitely a winner for me and my uses.   I found them to be equally as smooth as the Lincoln 7024-1's I inherited.   I've never tried WA's 7018's but their 6010's on my buzzbox (DC+) aren't too shabby either.   However, I've  heard others say that WA's 7018's are nothing to write home about.   My LWS stocks WA up the ying-yang.  They also carry Lincoln's  Excaliburs and Fleetweld rods of various classifications.
Reply:Originally Posted by mad welder 4 I should also add, Washington alloy 7018 is very hard to restart and I run really high OCV when in DC. Excalibur rods (Lincolns 7018 rod) are a breeze to restart. If you know the only time you are going to stop welding is to drop the stub, then Washington alloy is great, also cheaper than Excalibur rods.
Reply:I've heard good comments about the AIRCO "Easy Arc" E6011C rods.  Lincoln bought that line and maybe they still sell them as the Murex branded product. http://www.shopfloortalk.com/forums/...ad.php?t=33337  Yes, it's an AC/DC rod but maybe worth trying."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:I just looked in my stick rod pile, turns out I have Airco Easy-Arc 6011C in 5/32" and 6013D in 3/32". The 6013s run OK but the 6011s seem pretty lousy to me. However they are at least 15 yrs old and not stored in a sealed container. I've never been a big fan of 6011s either, I much prefer 6010.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
