At the shop where i work we have a guy who come during night shift sometime when we have some SS job to do, this guy work for himself part time for my boss and have hes own welding machine and polishing tools that he buy with his cash but hes working on some job that my company ask him to do, i don't really know what is hes ''deal'' with my boss and its not even my busines, but i find interesting to buy some bigger tool like a tig welding machine and basic stuff like small electric belt sander ect.. for working on my own stuff at my shop on my time after the work, but im wondering if my boss start to ask to work on real job after i bought those tool with my money what should i do ? asking him an extra haha? im not at that point yet but im just thinking for the future because i know the SS guy at my job don't want to continu to work there for the next year!some of you guys have bought some tools for yourself that you store at your job ? maybe you guys will tell me that not doing that its a trouble ? i want your advise and sorry for my english!i only have 2 years experience but i know one thing is buying tools its never a waste of cash and it will last you forever but you know welding machine over 2000$ its not something that you buy and not thinking before!Last edited by LayoutMan; 03-11-2012 at 11:30 PM.Calculator > Bevel Square

Reply:I have my own hand tools and measuring instruments, specialized tooling for my trade at work..I also have a good assortment of tools and tooling at home so I can work in my shop at home also. If the boss wants me to bring his work home with me he can pay me shop rate..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:Sometimes people work on contract.  I have been in shops where the overload will be done by someone who will come in on their own time and own tools and work for a flat rate.  No benefits, no worker's compensation, no taxes.  He bills the company for his time and looks after all the details.  Usually it is a temporary thing for a few weeks until the rush is over and he moves on.  The employer likes it because it is quick and easy with no paperwork.  The contractor likes it because he sets the times and amount of work he will do.  Often the contractor has a day job at another shop.
Reply:I work on servers and when I was hired on they said they would buy my tools so here is a magazine and pick out what I want. I did, and then the boss said put d own X,Y,Z for the other people because they need these as well. The order came out to $600 (give or take0 and my boss (who told me to pick out what I needed) denied it. So I had to buy all my own tools. 3 years later, he is now a co-worker and not the boss but he thinks he is. He is still an *******.  And I never got a refund. I've managed to get away with $100 or less of my own, but it just seems to be the way some companies are going to "cut costs"I found out later that he denied it because it looked like a big expense. He could of just cut the list down but no, he just denied it and didn't even tell me!Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:I have a bag of hand tools "personal tools" Company supplies all other tools. Think of it this way: what the company owns is covered under its insurance. If you bring your own cutting torch set up and it explodes, whos dime is it on? If you're under a contract then thats a different story. Rig welders sometimes insure themselves under their own contract. Bottom line is that spending your own money should only be on things that directly benefit you. Never buy stuff because you think it *might* get you a promotion or something like that. I would never leave a welding machine at a job unless I was collecting a rental fee from the company. and dont forget to write off what you buy for work.Local 597
Reply:intristing responses reflecting the historical  situations workmen have found themselves in over the ages..ranging from the itinerant journeyman who carried his tools on his back to the tech who needs equipment no individual can afford..and in between those who use what they have to pick up some work..
Reply:I've worked at shops that provided everything and some that provided the larger stuff.  I understand something like hand tools (wrenches, screw drivers, sockets, etc).  That is something that can walk away from a company.  I've seen guys that had their own clamps, and specialty fitting tools that made their job easier, but it was not a tool they used every day.  I think a company should provide the necessary equipment to do the job.  If they are not going to operate on a certain level chances are they are not going to take care of their employees.
