Yesterday was supposed to fly home off a job for the hollidays. Ticket bought n paid for. Somehow some guys I work with ended up talking me into riding home with them instead.( they were leaving 8 hours earlier than the soonest flight I could get, so they'd get me home faster)  Somewhere along the way we passed a truck with an old pipeliner in the back and I commented on it. The guy next to me says the magic words, (" I have one of those in my barn that my wife wants me to get rid of !") When we went buy his house to drop him off, we ran out to the barn with a flashlight, and its a redface sa-200 on a trailer. We worked out a deal on the spot, shook hands, and Im going to pick her up Saturday.2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302

Reply:hey guys picked up that sa-200 today, hour meter shows 500 hours, and after talking to the previous owner a little more, that may be all that it has ever been run.  Spent a little bit of time at lincolns website trying to figure out the exact year. Code is 5496 and serial is a-496---. The nearest i could tell is pre-1969. Ill post some picks when able.  Just a little rust and moss in her, should clean up nice.2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302

Reply:Look up JTMcC (on this board), he should have the complete serial number/year chart on his website somewhere.

Reply:I doubt the 500 hours.Lincoln didn't start putting hour meters on welding machine until the 1990's. And, who would buy a very expensive industrial welding machine (it's equivelent is around $12,000 today) and not use it. It doesn't matter tho as the machines last a long time and everything is rebuildable on them.JTMcC.

Reply:I'm just hanging out, We're taking the kids on the Grand Canyon train tomorrow, so I've been on extended Turkey Day break. I'm going to start looking seriously the day after tomorrow. Nothing big is going to break before the first of the year I'm sure. Why do they want to use stick rod? I suppose the hands like the coreshield 8 better than 232 huh?JTMcC.
Reply:Just got the sa-200 started today! New carb, fuel bowl, lines,  all from weldmart, service was excellent. Poured some marvel mystery oil in the top end. Im still in contact with the guy I got it from and he said the last time it was ran was about 12 years ago. Drained the old fuel, vacuumed a little rust out of the tank and installed an in line filter after the bowl. Changed the oil and put in mobil 1. Cranked right up! I still havent tried welding with her yet though. Normally after I get an engine running I shoot the exhaust manifold with a heat gun. Im finding the number one hole is much hotter than the other three.(450f vs mid 200's) She's running a little lopy and im wondering if I have a valve sticking or a restriction in the manifold or something? I wanted to see if anyone has experienced this before I started tearing everyting down. I really dont want to run it for very long for fear of scewing something up. Also does anyone know what the operating temp of a 162 is?2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302
Reply:That's great news for sure pilebuck.  Congratulations on getting it fired up.The higher #1 cylinder exhaust temp reading could be due to a bad valve letting some of the fire out of the hole.  That valve may have been in the open position all those 12 years and developed a little rust on the seat area.  A cylinder leakage test could tell you if it's leaking or not.As for the operating temperature of an F-162/163, acceptable range is 180-200 degees F with a 180 degree stat.Keep us posted on your progress.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I'll run out to the shop  and do a compression test real quick, thanks for the quick reply duanne!2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302
Reply:A compression check isn't a bad idea but it can't tell you if a low reading is from a bad valve or bad rings.  To do a leak check you'll have to apply air pressure to the cylinder with the piston at TDC and listen for air from the exhaust, intake or crankcase.  Be careful as if it's not exactly on TDC the air pressure will cause the engine to turn over.  Make sure the ignition switch is OFF or better yet pull the other plug wires or ground the mag kill terminal.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Thanks Duanne, heading back out to the shop. My compression tester doesnt have the right fitting for the 162 anyhow. Fired up the sae 300 to check its exhaust manifold temp. Reply:Ok, wasnt sure how to find tdc so I pulled the intake/manifold and removed the inspection cover. Had my brother bar the engine over while I watched the valves, found the last valve is sticking up on hole 4.  I plugged the ports and filled through the plug hole with mystery oil.  Hopefully i didnt do any damage and this seems like the likely culprit for the loping. Still need to troubleshoot why #1 hole is getting hot though. I'll see how everything looks tomorrow after an overnight soak.2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302
Reply:Good news, valve free'd up after a good soaking and some light coaxing w/ a rubber mallet and a brass punch on the valve spring. Barred over several more times by hand to make sure wasnt going to stick anymore. Put everything back together and ran it this morning. Engine sounds much better, smoothed out the lope and got rid of the clackiness. Now on to the other problem and I swear I read of someone else on this forum having the same issue.  Engine runs like a sewing machine for about 1 minute, maybe 2 and then shuts down. It seemed to be running longer yesterday, however I'm sure I never let it run any longer than five minutes because I was  worried about the high exhaust temp in hole 1.   Im kind of leaning towards it running out of fuel. As previously stated i drained the old fuel out of the tank and vacuumed out as much rust as i could. Installed new glass fuel bowl, inline filter, 1/4" fuel line to new zenith carb.  Bought a bunch of inline filters as I expected to have to change them often, until any of the loose rust i missed is gone. As expected, Ive already drained the bowl and replaced filters twice. I can make the engine keep running if I hold it to low idle at the carb, (when it tries to die), but if I let go after holding it to low idle for 20-30 seconds it will idle up to normal briefly and then die. I think i will go to a less restrictive in line filter as im currently using the cheap brass ones from autozone, and look into using a larger hose if need be too.2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302
Reply:From your description it does sound as if it's running out of fuel.  I don't know how much fuel you have in the tank but you may want to pull the sediment bowl/valve assembly to make sure the inlet is not plugged with rust debris.I'm still leaning toward a rusty and leaking exhaust valve/valve seat on #1 as the cause of the hotter manifold temperature.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Good idea Duanne, I'll check it out next time I get home, gotta head outta town this afternoon for work for two weeks. I was also kind of wondering if the brass inline filters I bought from autozone were supposed to be used with something that had a fuel pump/had some pressure to it vs gravity feed. I think I'm going to try to find some of the bigger see-through inline filters so I can see whats going on better. However, what you suggested actually sounds more likely as it seemed to run longer yesterday when i first cranked her over. Other info- checked oil psi- 28-30, r-57(?) idler diaphram seems to be pulling vacuum, have not checked water pump psi yet.2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302
Reply:I avoid the brass inline filters as they are restrictive. Inline see-through automotive filters are less restrictive, cheap, and available in a variety of hose barb styles. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j1...uel_filter.jpg
Reply:I installed plastic inline filters and ran, welder shut down pretty quick. Installed remote fuel cell (pop bottle with fuel siphon) and welder ran fine. Put air nozzle to original fuel line and blew pressure back to tank. Welder runs fine now. Old rust chunks plugging hole before glass bowl. Keep running and changing filters/ clean bowl. Reply:I don't know if this will help, but a trick I use on old Caterpillar pony motor tanks (never tried it on a welder tank but I don't know why it wouldn't work) take it off of the machine, drain the fuel, put a couple gallons of water in it throw a handful of nuts and bolts in it, and shake the hell out of it. The nuts and bolts will knock the rust loose then just pour the water, nuts and bolts out, give it a quick rinse with a gallon or so of gas let it dry out then you should be good to go. I have used this trick several time on pony motor fuel tanks, noted they are only about 2 quart tanks though but it works great. Hope it helps.Ken
