Reply:Anything that meets or exceeds the CFM and Pressure requirements of the machine will work.  A large storage tank is helpful, as it will decrease they cycling rate of the compressor.  ALWAYS buy a belt driven, oil lubricated compressor.Brands like Curtiss, Quincy, Ingersoll Rand, Saylor-Beall, atlas copco, etc will be much higher quality than your average home-store compressor like Kobaly, husky, campbell hausfeld, etc.

Imagine if your  1750 or 3450 RPM motor is connected directly to your pump , THEN THATS YOUR PUMP SPEED....1000 -1200 RPM compressors are considered too fast and hot running.  If the manufacture doesnt give you the pump speed and you want to guestimate for yourself to get a cooler running compressor  , use this formula :  RPM of Motor X Diameter of Motor Pulley (in inches) divide by other Diameter of Pulley in inches equals the second shaft speed.        thermal arc 252i  -  millermatic 350P -   miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs  -   Hypertherm 1250 G3
Reply:I too am looking into buying a new compressor. Im a big fan of the saying you get what you pay for, so in my opinion stay away from harbor freight. Also don't just look at what you're going to use it for right now  look towards the future so you are happy with it and won't have to buy another. Even if you pick up that Campbell and years down the line you want more psi, then you buy a 2 stage pump and just mount it up. I wouldn't go for anything less than 60 gal. Can you run 220v or are you stuck with 115v? What is your price range also.
