A few months back I applied for a Mechanic B Welder position at Con Edison (NYC). I got the email a few weeks ago to go take the computer tests, and I did and passed. I got an email last week to take a practical welding exam. The original advertisement for the position said the the candidate must have "knowledge of API 1104 welding code or have attended a certified welding school." I specifically stated on my resume and in my experiences that I have never welded to API 1104 code and that I am only currently certified to weld structural all positions. When I inquired more, I was told that the Welder B position does not require the applicant to be API 1104 certified and that upon progression to Welder A, welders are API 1104 certified. So my question is: does anyone know what might be on this practical welding exam? Will I be asked to demonstrate simple things like a fillet weld? Will I be asked to weld vertical or overhead to demonstrate proficiency with structural welding? Its a 10-hour exam, so I'm just trying to figure out what I should be practicing and what I should be expecting..Thanks!

Reply:I did, and was told "it will be a practical welding exam." This was over email. I left a voicemail with a hiring manager hoping to get some more details, but haven't received a return call yet.
Reply:i worked in a lot of their plants and from talking to con-ed welders it was my understanding that they trained you in their school.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:I used to work for Con ED  at Indian point , all I can say is be prepared for the worst and it will be easy. Most of the welding is pipe with some fab work in the machine shops . I do not know if they still have the Nuclear titles but if they do sign on the line and take the money . It has been a while since I left but I guess they still have the major maintance gang at Vaness shop . Good luck they had the best benefits I ever had .

Reply:Hey guys, first post.....glad to be a part of the community! Just finished an intro welding class at a local technical school and I recently applied for Con Ed and have been scheduled for the same exam in this post....mechanic b - welder.  My exam is scheduled for next week but I am unsure if it is a practical/hands on or a general written/welding basics exam.  I have tried to email the HR rep that I spoke with but have yet to hear anything.  I have been reading and watching videos on welding basics just curious as what to expect.
