I have an end table I'm thinking about making that involves brazing brass and/or bronze rods to square mild steel tubing. I don't have an O/A rig, but I saw that muggyweld has rods that will supposedly do it using Mapp gas but they want $30 each for an 18" flux coated rod (http://muggyweld.com/ssf-6-sample-pack?search=ssf-6). Does anyone have a cheaper source for something similar?Last edited by JD1; 01-07-2016 at 12:23 PM.
Reply:try jewelry supply for silver solder and brazing rods .https://contenti.com/soldering-n-joining.real silver brazing contain silver and is not cheap. there are other brazing rod alloys with less silver and are cheaper. some types flow thinner for filling thin gaps other are more semi liquid and easier to create a fillet joint.many filler metals have gone up in price a lot. some is inflation and some is pollution control laws required to make the filler rods. i have seen some materials go up from $20/lb to $50/lb in 30 years.often it is cheaper per pound if you buy a larger quantity buying 10 lbs at $40/lb is $400. and if you only need 2 lbs at $100 than many just get that even if higher per pound price. some fluxed rod goes bad over many years. it is often better to buying newer rod every year than keep a large box around for 20 years going bad in storage
Reply:To avoid some frustration .  you might want to find out what type torch they use.  It took quite a while heat up the metal in the video.  Thus, if you use smaller torch than that, then you might reach braze temp.  Benzomatic does sale a small oxy-fuel set up,  so you can use a variety of fillers.
Reply:That looks like a turbo torch, it will fit on a standard small propane or mapp gas cylinder, but the turbo action gives a much higher heat than a standard torch...I cant believe ho expensive the silver brazing rod has gotten...I use turbotorch brand sf-5 for brazing with just mapp gas, or acetylene with a turbo torch..for brass copper or steel, if you use steel you need the proper white paste flux not standard plumbing flux for copper pipe..http://www.amazon.com/Bernzomatic-TS...ds=turbo+torchOf all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...

Reply:I almost fell down when I saw amazons price....I bought from ebay in 2009  a 25 pound box..( 25 1lb containers) and i think it was only around $200.00..holly crap it went up in price..but it works great ...just took a look out in the shop and have 20 pounds left...its about 30 rods per pound...yes it will do those rods to the tube no problem, you can build up a nice bead around the rod where it would connect to the steel tube..just by moving around the heat..Last edited by roadkillbobb; 01-07-2016 at 05:28 PM.Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:http://www.gossonline.com/air-propan...-snap-in-style. I have one of these.   Allows for out of position brazing.  Just doesn't heat up parts fast enough for me.
Reply:Can't find pricing or who sells them. Do they fit Mapp gas cylinders?
Reply:No from the look of the regulator it uses larger propane tanks...so no to the mapp cylinders and it will be alot more than $50.00.....I believe the flux for this rod , you can use borax mixed with a little water to make a paste, you can google it, and shows you how..Last edited by roadkillbobb; 01-07-2016 at 05:48 PM.Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:You never know what you will find on CL. I have 3 air/ acetylene rigs one for an MC cylinder and 2 for B size cylinders. I doubt I paid more than $40 complete for any of them, though I regularly see them going for between $75-100. I also bought a whole box of air/propane tips dirt cheap to get 2 of the air acetylene ones I wanted, then sold the propane tips to someone else. Shame shortly after that I came across an air/propane torch and reg at a yard sale for $10 and I could have used a selection of different tip sizes to go with it.Same goes for standard OA gear. I have a selection of regs and torches I've picked up dirt cheap over the years..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I used it on a 20lb propane tank.  I seem to recall purchasing an adapter for the benzomatic cylinder.  I just needed to accessories my tool box.  Hence, never used it,  probably wouldn't recognize it if I see it.  Scratch that found it.....  I think. Scratch that,  one adapter is not a small acetylene.  Another adapter has a Schrader valve but does not fit anything I have currently in my shop.  No Benz cylinders.Last edited by tapwelder; 01-07-2016 at 06:59 PM.
Reply:The contenti people responded to my email and said their pre-fluxed solder would work. $8.20 for 1 oz plus shipping. https://contenti.com/phos-copper-solder-paste Looks like it's for delicate stuff not big end tables but maybe it would work. My brass to steel connections are only decorative, not structural. I wonder how many I could make with 1 oz of solder. If only a couple, that would send it into the price range of everything else. It's a cheap test though.
Reply:that wont work, its a paste with ground up solder in it, more for a fitting type fit up, example sliding copper pipe into a fitting, you will not be able to build up any material on what you want todo...how many rods do you need to braze onto that steel piece?Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:I don't know yet and don't have a feel for how much rod it'll take per joint. The table is still in the drawing stage and I'm not sure I can get to it right away because of other required projects, home maintenance and otherwise. For example, my 14 yr old grandson has gotten big into knife making and wants me to weld up a 2" x 72" belt grinder for him. Then he's retiring his coal forge and wants help building a propane one. You have to grab opportunities like that when they're available, he'll be on his own someday and those times will be fewer.  But one of these days, hopefully soon, I'll have time to do my fun projects. Anyway I thought about asking if you'd be willing to sell me a couple rods so I could see if they'd work before I bought a bunch, if you are I'll PM you once I'm able to start the end table.

Reply:Thank you! I'll be in touch as soon as I can get started. Very interesting about the knife blade design.
