I am battling welder's flash right now due to my miller classic running out of battery and flicking on and off mid weld two days ago. I only welded one little bead, but it sucks.I want to make sure that it never happens again, so I want to make sure that reflective flash is also not a culprit. So, what pair of safety sunglasses keeps you safe, and does it effect your visibility on the weld? Thanks.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:You don't really need shaded glasses under the hood.As mentioned a set of clear safety glasses will work.Won't help from getting flashed if yer AD lens doesn't work BUT that is not causing Arc eye- if you have irchy eyes from welding.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:auto darkening has 100% uv protection  built in so the welding flash didn't come from low batteries,  it would have come from a reflection off your chest or some other object that got behind your helmet. Any safety glasses that say 99% uv protection will almost elimate this problem.
Reply:I can't for the life of me figure how all of a sudden these guys getting arc burn on their eyes w/ AD hoods. I've let arc shadows get on the sensor in my Speedglas and had a second or two of no AD and my eyes don't seem to have been burned. I've always had my AD set at #8 whether welding w/ the MM175 turned up all the way or burning 1/8"sticks. Maybe my old eyes just have too many callouses to get burned, LOL!! If this occurs early in the AM maybe it's an effect from the hangover from the night before.  It's also hard for me to believe reflection off a shirt can burn eyes. Yes, if someone is welding behind you and you get a reflection off your lense, I can believe that.                                       MikeLast edited by mla2ofus; 01-10-2016 at 03:15 PM.Ol' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:i usually use sunglasses under the hood, and keep things as dark as possible, and i dont use auto darkening.    when i run into trouble, and need it lighter to see what i'm doing, i tilt my head forward and peek over the top of the sunglasses for a brief moment.  Also, i like tinted safety glasses for grinding, it's easier on my eyes.      lately i've been having problems w/ one eye.    so i'm thinking about getting some glasses w/ one darker lens on one side.     anyone have any suggestions on a pair of light weighted framed glassess that have diff shade lenses that pop out?
Reply:i weld full time. battery ran low last month after years in service and didnt work correctly, plus i forget to turn hood on from time to time ETC. Get flashed but it never hurt my eyes. Hell, sometimes, I forget to turn the hood on but ofcourse I am going an important tac and just say, F it and keep welding for a second. Still no hurt eyes that night or next day. Dont really get it. I certainly would not wear 2-3 years worth of sunglasses after installing a fresh battery in the hood. Just write the date of your battery install with a paint pen inside your hood. change every could years to avoid the daily sunglass hassle. Be warned, my eyes are pretty fit from hours reading WW and the porno.
Reply:I had to finish a few inches of weld, when my hood battery died mid weld.Terrible bright light, but no arc eye.
Reply:Wow, sunglasses under the hood?!?! If you are getting flashed under the hood than it's not fitting correctly or you need a neck flap on the bottom of the helmet. Additionally you should be wearing safety glasses under the hood anyway which will protect you from the stray UV rays. I protect my eyes from sparks, slag, etc anyway with safety glasses at all times. Reply:Ok, thanks for all the help everyone. Stupid me, I left my helmet outside under the carport and since it is winter, it was about 10 degrees at night. I saw it blink, but I had it on mid/low sensitivity, so I turned the sensitivity up to the max and it worked a little while longer until it started flickering and cut out. I actually think it could have been reflective as well, so that is why I asked. I never knew of this issue until this happened to me, so good to know what to wear.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Why dont you just replace the battery?
Reply:This is why I dumped my Lincoln Viking and went to a Pipeliner with a gold #10.  I wear $19.99 Home Depot safety sunglasses underneath.  This prevents my eyes from getting shell-shocked from the bright sun when I flip the hood up for grinding, mig wire clipping or and/or slag chipping etc....  The glasses are perfect for welding too as they are not too dark when working in conjunction with the Pipeliner hood. I'll only use the clear glasses if I'm welding in the dark when the sun dips down. The safety sunglasses are some what impact resistant lenses and perfect to protect the eyes for grinding, chipping and the occasional arc flash isn't as "brutal".Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
