okay guys going in tomorrow to talk to a company about getting hired on. whats some last minute advice yall could me before i go talk to them? and im to the point welding position is great but just looking for a job first hand. Whats some advice yall could give me? its a pipeline company that also does the maintenance and repair work.
Reply:Be honest and do not blow your horn. Give them provable facts that are easy enough for them to check. If you have a face book account clean it up and keep it that way. Look neat and clean and look them in the eye when you talk.  Be ready to back up any of your statements. Be sure of yourself without being condescending and do not tear others down. I hope you have a resume that is brief, concise and hose no employment gaps that are not explained with a brief statement.Last edited by thegary; 01-10-2016 at 08:15 PM.
Reply:Pictures of your work on your phone. Only show if asked. Shut your phone off before the interview. Clean, neat dress. Have gear for a welding test in your car. Good luckDan D.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:In addition to what the others have already said.....Firm hand shake before and after the interview.   Talk with confidence.  If you don't know the answer, be honest and give a solution with that response if warranted.  Tell them you'd research the answer and find out.  Tell them you're willing to work all hours, any day of the week (to get your foot in the door) because you need to be flexible.  At the end they may say, "tell us about yourself and your training and experience."   That's your time to shine with modesty and honesty.  Be your own advocate for the job.  Tell them that you would like to see yourself as a "long term" employee with the company in the future.  Tell them that even if given the job, you will always continue with your welding "education" throughout your career, striving to always learn more and give an honest day's work to the company (employer).   Speak with confidence and not like a "sleep worker"  who stands behind the cash register at a toll road booth.   Be enthused laugh:  don't mumble or say too many "ughhhh's" in your sentences.  At the end, ask them a question or two.  If you don't know, ask them about their own in-house training program, benefits, or stuff like that.  Keep it simple but a question or two at the end for them, also shows ambition and that you're serious.  Have an answer for them when you can start.  If you're already working now, tell them you'd like to leave your current employer on good terms and give at least a week's notice.  If you sense that they don't like that answer, say you can also start immediately if need be.  Again, be flexible. Thank them for the interview opportunity at the end.  Let us know how it goes!Last edited by SuperArc; 01-11-2016 at 01:39 AM.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:iN 1992 I interviewed for a pipeline job, I didn't have much pipe experience at all but did have a few certs.  There were more than 50 guys interviewing for 2 positions...........I got 1.  After I was hired and had worked a few weeks I asked the guy who had interviewd me why he chose me when, in my opinion there were quite a few guys much more qualified than me.  He asked me if I remembered him asking me if I had ever made a bad weld, then reminded me of my answer..........."Oh heck yes, LOTS of bad welds!"  Then he told me that EVERY guy he had interviewed, when asked the SAME question had said NO, they had never made a bad weld, which we all know is impossible and not really honest at6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:@ Cowboy_97 - excellent above advice.  Be ready for the classics, "Tell me about a particular challenge you faced and succeeded", "What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses?", and "What questions do you have for me?"Think, Draft, and Deliver both written and verbal responses to these questions prior to your interview.  Be honest with yourself and to all prospective employers. Always remember WHY someone hires you.  It's so simple.  Most humans do not understand why.Someone hires you to help them solve their problems.  An employer has money and is willing to give you some of it for your time and efforts in solving their problems.Within two days after your interview, be sure to mail (old school) a Thank You note/card.  A simple and professional touch.Best fortune with your preparation & interview.Last edited by ManoKai; 01-11-2016 at 05:34 AM.Reason: syntax"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Reply:well yeah its all stuff my dad taught me haha been doing a lot of interviews especially thru FFA (if you aren't familiar with it done ask) just was looking if there is something special to talk about or make note of. BTW the owner of the company-bought my champion show heifers, kids were taught by my mom, and was contracted by my grandfather for pipeline construction when my grandfather was with Phillips 66, and is a huge supported and alumni of my college (shsu). Just need insight on how to get to him because I'm pretty confident if i can just get a conversation with him

Reply:don't get discouraged if it don't turn out cowboy.    sometimes employers don't want people overqualified or to aggressive.   figuring your background - a hard worker, and business owner and knowing as much as you do, this might very well  be the case.    It's likely some employers will be intimidated by you, so keep that in mindLast edited by 123weld; 01-12-2016 at 12:57 AM.

Reply:Yea, I don't think Broc saw that comment cowboy made. It sort of changed the game for me anyways. No harm done. Ed's a good dude Joe's a good guy and has a lot of experience. I just felt dude majorly disrespected him and Joe was actually trying to offer him some help. I had a guy do that to me once here a long time ago. He was one of those dudes that asked a lot of questions, then wanted to argue with everyone about it. Anyways, he asked me a bunch of questions about his A/BP 330 and I tried to help him out. Spent some time walking him thru some stuff, that sort of thing.Anyways, shortly after that I posted a thread about a couple of A/BP 330 welders I more or less brought back from the dead. I had before pics of one, but the only after pics I had were of the second machine I did. I didn't go into great detail about the fact I had done two machines when I posted the thread, just a basic before and after kind of deal. This F'ing douchebag makes a post in my thread CALLING ME OUT AS A FRAUD BECAUSE HE NOTICED THE PICS WERENT OF THE SAME MACHINE!!!!!Can you fu@king believe that shlt!? After all the time I spent helping him, and he wants to try and say I didn't really restore that machine because the after pics were of an identical unit, but with the PFC caps in a different place!?Fu@k me running! I was hopping mad, and basically told the guy to shove it and if he ever needed any more help with his welder he could take a long walk off a short pier.So yea, I pretty well have no use for ppl that wanna try and pull shlt like that after someone tries to help them out. Kinda rattles my cage a little, I guess Last edited by 7A749; 01-12-2016 at 04:39 PM.Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948

Reply:Hehehe..I just have no use for ppl like that. None at all.  There's too many ppl that freely give of their time and resources here to be treated so disrespectfully by some ungrateful, assuming douchebag such as that. It's one hell of a slap in the face to spend a considerable amount of time helping someone out so they can turn around and accuse you of lying and misrepresenting yourself. As a moderator I have about zero tolerance for those type of ppl. They pull that garbage on someone here, I'll show them the door in a heartbeat.IMHO of courseLast edited by 7A749; 01-12-2016 at 08:37 PM.Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
