When do you use 4043 or 5356?Does one weld easier than the other?
Reply:It really depends on the base metal alloy. 5xxx uses 5356, 6xxx series use 4043. Some alloys don't mix wellTeach Ag Mech - Mike At Home:Lincoln Electric AC225Miller Challenger 172Gas AxeWork:eclectic bunch of 90's vintage blue boxes

Reply:Good deal on the links Dave. I was trying to think where I got my chart at work.Teach Ag Mech - Mike At Home:Lincoln Electric AC225Miller Challenger 172Gas AxeWork:eclectic bunch of 90's vintage blue boxes
Reply:The charts the best, but it can tell you the quick and dirty I've learned here.  Of course, you need to reference that it's suitable to the alloy you're welding.  Exceptions exist though and I'm only a hobby guy.  4043 flows better, is used when the part is meant to sustain over 200*F continually.  It gets grainy from overheating because the increased silicon will precipitate out.  It's softer than 5356.  Apparently it can't be anodized, it turns some weird color or something.  5356 has more magnesium, not supposed to be used on parts that will see continued use in heat (although Shovelon says that's bull), and is stronger.  Will take anodizing.4943 is supposed to be the best of both worlds.I use 5356 for everything and have never had any issues.Last edited by Drf255; 09-18-2014 at 05:14 AM.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:Any and all anodization WILL NOT STICK to 4043...And FWIW I use 5356 on aluminum castings and 4043 on Billet...Some may agree to disagree but that's how it is with me.Your results may vary....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Originally Posted by shovelonI have changed my stance on that. I have never seen any inter granular corrosion from elevated service temps, but I can't say that it won't happen. I used to use 5356 exclusively on thread repair, regardless of service temps as 4043 is too soft and much too dependent on based level dilution for strength. But 4943 might be the ticket as the magnesium content is below the service temp threshold.
Reply:Originally Posted by rlitmanThe softness in 4043 is there to prevent shrinkage cracking.  That's not really an issue with thread repair.
