Friday, a buddy stopped by and asked me to fab up a couple of simple brackets for his forklift.  Said no rush, just when you get a chance.Today, had a few minutes (about 30), so I went ahead and knocked them out.  Wasn't going to charge him anything since I sometimes use his forklift and I used scrap to make them up.Dropped them off by his shop.  He tried to pay me but I wouldn't take it.  Said I'd take it out in trade. On the way out, I noticed a good size pipe vice sitting on the floor.  Asked him what he was going to do with it?  Said, he got it in an auction with other items, but didn't really have a use for it.  Did I want it.  Didn't have to ask twice.Older Record Model 94 1/2, 5" pipe vice.  Made in England.  Perfect condition.  Sitting next to my Ridgid pipe vice, the difference in the quality of tooling is quite apparent.  An oldie but a goodie.  Think the Ridgid just found a home on the work trailer.Overall, a good day.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:Weldermike,Not quite that bad, but dang close.Yeah, I am an oldtimer.  Was writing machine code for a Univac 1108 back when I did my graduate work (UM, 1975 Industrial Engineering w/ a concentration in Systems Analysis).  Was working with a Cray when the original IBM PC's (just after Apple) came out.In the military, I took a gazillion photos all over the world, but they were developed and generally categorized by others. Then, after I retired, I got into yacht sales.  Took many photos of boats for listing purposes, but the photos were "processed" by my listing secretary.Got to a point where I was half way decent with managing my photos with Adobe Photoshop Elements.  Then my home computer took a hard drive dump so I replaced it.  My version of Adobe PE of course wouldn't work with Windows 7, so I had to upgrade the software.  Still haven't gotten comfortable with it.Have a pretty decent Canon digital camera which I DID charge up last night.  Took the camera to the shop.  Took photos of the Record pipe vice, some shots of my gas setup and other equipment.  Then walked right out of the shop and left the camera there. Will try to get some photos up tomorrow. Here's a pre-post tickler:Record pipe viceThermco Ar/CO2 mixer3 Smith mixers (Ar/CO2, Ar/O2, Ar/He)Cart/setup for the XMT304, 714 Feeder, and Optima PulserPortable/adjustable welding tableDedicated tungsten grinder (with diamond wheels)Air Compressor with PAC air system.Shops still sort of a mess.  Seems like everytime I go to straighten things up, someone else needs something done that takes my time.  Currently working on a frame to hang my airline chiller over the bench and out of the way.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:OK Guys-  You want photos....Here they come.  Will take several posts.Keep in mind my shop is a 30' x 50' metal insulated building.  One entrance door and one 12' x 14' overhead door.  In the back of the shop, next to the bathroom, I built a 10' x 20' storeroom for heated/dehumidified storage.  Needed because we're so close to the Chesapeake Bay and the humidity kicks butt.First up are pics of the storeroom. One wall is for consumable/spare storageOther side is for general storageThen we have workshop essentials. Reply:Then, if you're going to weld it, you need the right gas mixes. The first photo is of the Thermco Argon/CO2 mixer.  This is a "shop only" mixer which I use a longer feeder hose on.  The Thermco (unlike the Smiths) does not set the "flow rate".  For that I feed the flowgauge (a Smith Select-O-Gas mounted on a magnetic base) at 30PSI thru the feeder hose.  The flowmeter mounts on the machine I'm using and attaches with a Western quick connect.  The Thermco allows me to mix any Ar/CO2 mix with just a twist of a knob.  The Thermco is fed by a 330 Argon and a 50# CO2 cylinder.  Both bottles are equipped with Smith regulators which deliver the gas at 100PSI.The second photo is of the 3 Smith mixers I use.  Starting on the left is an Ar/CO2 mixer which can be carried to the field.  In the middle is the Ar/O2 mixer which is used for a hot spray arc mix.  And, on the right is the Ar/He mixer (can also mix Hydrogen).  This is used for welding heavy aluminum in tig. Reply:Then, I should mention the XMT 304, Miller 714 Digital Feeder, and Optima Pulser.Built the cart so that everything was readily accessible but all in one spot.  The drawer came from an old army field file that I picked up along the way.  Because of the humidity, I don't keep a large spool (33#) of .045 wire hung on the feeder.  That spool stays back in the storeroom in a file cabinet.  That cabinet (in addition to the room dehumidifier) has a "golden rod" dehumidifier stick installed under the bottom drawer.  That's where I keep the sensitive instruments and some of my woodworking planes and chisels.First up in this set of photos is the front view of the XMT, feeder and the Optima Pulser.  Built a "bracket" for the Optima so it wasn't just "hanging around".  Easy to just slide off if needed. Then we have a right side view of the XMT and cart. Then we have a closeup of the XMT & cart.Left side view of the XMT. Reply:And as we all know, a shop's got to have air.First photo is of the 80gal, 2 Stage IR Compressor.  This unit delivers air at 175 PSI.  Since few of my air tools need this PSI, and line loss (of air) at that PSI is significant, I installed the IR PAC (air regulation system) after the compressor, but before the air is fed to the delivery lines.  I set the PAC to deliver air at 120PSI.Compressor and IR PAC system.Closeup of IR PAC system Attached ImagesSyncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Then every shop has tools specific to one's needs.JD2 Model 32 Bender w/air hydraulic.  Was going to build a cart for it, but had an old motorcycle lift that I didn't use much.  Set the base on it, and as it turns out, it works great.  Just roll the whole bender out of the way when it's not being used. Then we've got the dedicated tungsten grinder with diamond wheels.  Done a writeup on this before with guidance on the discs and cabbing wheel. Reply:And every shop needs a "welding table".Mine is a little "different" in that it's adjustable in height from 26" to 40"The top is 3' x 5' and 1/2" thick.  The main frame is made from 2" x 2" tube.  The vertical legs have a pipe insert that fits my Acme screws.  The Acme screws were salvaged from several old boat stands ( I figured if they were good enough to support a 50 Ton boat they'd hold my table).  Wanted a table that could be cranked down for tig welding in an office chair (old azz is getting lazy) or cranked up to mate with my I-Beam horses.Instead of having a huge table, I use two very solid horses (made from I beams) to "extend my table".  The height adjustment on the table enables me to set the table at the exact height of the horses.  The horses also provide a mounting platform for the vice, tube rollers, flat bar roller, notcher, etc. Attached ImagesSyncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Then, just to give a "little bigger" picture, I included a couple "shop photos.First one is looking diagonally across shop.Second one is looking back into the shop.  The storeroom is in the far back left corner.  Still gives me 40' of clear space (if I didn't have so much junk in there) to the door.Comments? Reply:That looks like a real nice shop Sundown. I don't know how you can work in there with all those welding machines in the way!
Reply:DSW,Good eye.  That's a Porter-Cable dry cut saw with the Freud metal cut blade.  Someday I'll probably build a stand for it (on rollers) but for now I generally just grab it and carry it outside and use the shopmate bench.  Actually, and it's hard to see, but I also use the Rockwell Jaw Horse quite a bit.Been using the JD2 basic notcher for years now, but plan to order a new Notchmaster in the next week or two.Funny that I just happened to be in the middle of building a rack system (similar to the rack that holds the Thermco mixer) for my airline chiller.  Using 2' x 2" x 1/8" angle, so the HH 187 was all I needed for that material.Doing marine work, a lot of what I do is with aluminum.  That vertical band saw is used "only" for aluminum (6 tpi blade).  Also use the Milwaukee 8" metal cut saw and the Milwaukee porta-band a lot.  Not much aluminum gets cut with plasma in my shop.LOL about your "projects" comment.  No, at this point in life I don't work 8-10 hours, 7 days a week in the shop, but every piece of gear you see has been paid for (more than once) from the work I do do.  I was in yacht sales for nearly 20 years (after retiring from the military) and if I learned one thing, it's that boat owners don't like having their mistakes put out there for the world to see.  A lot of what I do is repair vs new construction. For instance, this week I've got to repair a damaged bow rail (1 1/4" SS) on a 55' Sea Ray.  Don't think the owner would be too happy about my "publishing the repair" since the whole objective is to make it look like nothing ever happened.  Don't need the advertising since all the yards in the area know who can do what.  I probably turn down nearly as much work as I take on.  Guess it's a good position to be in.  Several potential "customers" have found that, with me, the fastest way to get their work "rejected" is to tell me how to do it or tell me how much it should cost.Remember, that I also do custom woodworking.  My woodworking shop (actually much larger than this shop (26' x 100') is at a buddy's marine yard (sold him the property several years ago).  That shop is about 200 yards from the metal shop.  Wood and metal (SS and Alum) are used quite a bit in marine fabrication, but I've found the two processes don't "cohabitate" very well.  Generally parts start in the metal shop and then move to the woodworking shop.I've always used a "pay as you go" mentality for my metal and woodworking equipment.  When you need a particular piece of equipment to do a job, you go and get it.  It's taken a long time (many years) to accumulate the metal and woodworking equipment I have, but it's all paid for.  My total overhead (including utilities, property taxes, permits, insurance, etc) amounts to <$1,500/mo.  I cover that in three days of work. It's a "small community" I live in, but generally the locals all work together pretty well.  Good friend of mine has a machine shop and I get pretty quick turnaround there.  Another good friend (he grew up next door to me) owns a large fab shop with CNC Hi Def plasma cutter, water jet, and full machine shop.  It's 8 miles up the road, but if I need major brake or shear work done I just use his equipment.  Actually, he sends a lot of the smaller jobs to me because they just "don't fit" his operation.  His "major clients" come from the textile industry, the paper mills, and the seafood processing industry.I do as much as I want (work wise), but I'm here to tell you, those 80+ hour workweeks are in the rear view mirror.  Fish will be biting soon, so got to get the priorities in order.  Headed out soon for the pistol range.  Scheduled to teach a "firearms safety" class this afternoon.  Be back later.Last edited by SundownIII; 05-06-2012 at 11:10 AM.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:Nice to see your shop Sundown. You so a heck of a job cleaning that shop.  I was hard pressed to find dust on any surface.  I find it difficult to keep dust off most things, especially ofter plasma cutting.  I sweep and vacuum as much as possible.Oh, Brett, i dont have a beer fridge in my garage either.  I stupid enough with out mixing amber fluid and power tools.
Reply:LarryO,LOLThere's plenty of dust, believe me.  Photos can lie.  That's one of the reasons I went to the trouble of building the storeroom.  That does help a lot.I try to do my "major grinding" outside.  Same with the plasma cutting.  My cutting table for the plasma is around the side of the building.  Saw cutting most of the aluminum helps too, besides the fact that it doesn't make the mess that steel does in the first place.Actually moving machines from one shop to another (not that I do it that often) is really not a big problem.  The welders (even the Sync) will roll on/off my trailer at either location.  Lot easier than in times past.  Got a pallet (shop built) that I roll the Sync on and lash it down.  Then I take it to the boat with the forklift.  Before I got the Dynasty, it wasn't that unusual to see me working up on the bridge of a boat (welding handrails, etc) with the Sync 8' off the ground.  The Dynasty has pretty much solved that problem.  I do have a large assortment of 6ga, 8ga, and 10ga extension cords that will extend over a good deal of the yard.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Thanks for the tour SDIII, I have most all my junk jammed in a 30'x40', wheels on things are good, wheels and adjusting screws = better.I didn't see the record vise though??? And you got a whole bunch of the coffee thing going on...Handy is handy & it's good to be handy, my woodworking junk is mostly stored & a real pain to get it ready & going. I got the fatal flaw from my dad with wood (apple fell too close to the tree). I fiddle with it so long that at 10 cents per hour nobody could afford it. Somewhere I've got a box for a height master I built from plywood where I lock-mitered the four sides on the table saw and on the  two end pieces the lock-miter was done with a Gerber cross-cut hand saw (just to see how it would work out.. not bad & not really that slow!). Hand chiseled & hand sawed mortise & tenon joints for old timey windows are good for the soul also. Fidelity to the people & their talent who got me here is the best... I'm just slow at that other stuff but as faithful to the craft as possible.Soooo, to recap, thanks for the peek, post the Record pics, and after 16-18 cups of coffee plus whatever gas you're brewing in that Keurig thing you should be back before I post this...MattPS, what do you call an aluminum Dutchman???Last edited by Matt_Maguire; 05-06-2012 at 09:14 PM.
