So.......Our steel fabricator left a bunch of shavings and grinding dust on the new concrete at the house we're building. The rains have come and there are some extensive rust stains. Is there any way he/we can remove them? Thanks for any input!!
Reply:try hardware store. a lot of people have water with high iron in it leaving stains from lawn sprinklers.hardware store usually has stuff to clean it
Reply:Oxilic acid works great and is cheap..http://www.ehow.com/how_5626890_remo...alic-acid.htmlOf all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:Most things that will remove the rust will also etch the concrete.I successfully removed rust stains from my driveway with a high pressure water washer.
Reply:There are commercial rust removers that you can find in home improvement stores, but please use caution as they are very strong and will "bleach" out your clothes if you come into contact with them. A homestyle remedy to try is good old vinegar -- either white or apple cider, whichever is cheaper. Pour it on, let set and repeat, then scrub with a stiff brush. This is good to remember when you have yard tools or other metal objects that are rusted. Household cleaners containing oxalic acid -- used to clean sinks without scratching -- also do a good job on rust.
Reply:My concrete driveway is a brushed type finish.  Any rust, I use a 4.5" angle grinder with a wire wheel and lightly hit the rust with it.  Like magic, the rust disappears.   Now had I had a smooth polished concrete finish, this would not work too well.  Too many scratches would be noticeable.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Oxalic acid is available pretty cheap from taxidermy suppliers - about $6. for a pound.  It's used to pickle hides before tanning.http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/Pic...ents-C196.aspxOr try a local Sherwin-Williams paint store.http://www.sherwin-williams.com/home...g/wood_bleach/Here is a good thread on using oxalic acid to get rid of rust on a chromed BMX bicycle frame.  Note the part about not leaving it soak too long between scrubbings - the yellow or green stuff.http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=351132"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
