What is the difference between Lincoln's 5P and 6P, then there is 8P rod also? Also there are variants of 7018 such as "Excalibur", (which I use a lot), 7018MR, 7018 "Murex" and a couple other variants like "A1", A2" etc. Thanks,SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:some say they can notice a difference. .i have only noticed a bad batch of 7018 where when you strike a arc the flux breaks off rod the full length of the rod. i would think they use a binder and if too much hard to start arc (break off end) and if too little the flux comes off too easily..some rod has different arc force, penetration, arc stability with low voltage, etc with difference flux additives
Reply:Mostly the chemistry of the weld bead deposited slob. The 5P, 6P, 8P, etc are cellulose coated rods with progressively higher strength.  Most of that strength comes from adding Manganese and Carbon to the weld deposit; if I remember correctly. The 7018 rods you mentioned  are all basically the same.  The 7018MR is a moisture resistant flux coating on the rod.  It's supposed to reduce moisture absorbtion for a specified period of time out of the original package or rod oven.  The rods with Suffixes A1, A2, B2, B3, B9, C1, C2, C3 are modified chemistries.  A suffixes have small amounts of Chromium and Molybdenum added for strength at higher temperatures.  Same thing for the B suffixes; only more so.  The C suffixes have Nickel added for increased strength and toughness at low temperatures. This is all off the top of my head.  If it's critical to something you're working on check the AWS filler metal spec for SMAW electrodes for the exact answers.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:in the old days they put asbestos in 6010 flux and they stop doing it in the 1980's ?? as high probability that some became air borne and was breathed in..there were welders who swore 6010 was never as good since they stop using asbestos. you have to wonder if made outside the USA welding rod has asbestos in it.
Reply:Some Files I haveLincoln SMAWAlso, my local Home Depot carries the 50lb tin cans for $65-70ea.  Have no idea how they price it so low.  They have 5P+, 6P+, and 7018MR-A1 H4R, mostly 1/8", but some 5/32".Last edited by Oscar; 01-21-2016 at 11:48 AM. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig!
