I'm doing a lot of aluminum sheet fabrication, 0.125 and 0.90. Currently I'm tig welding but considering a spool gun attachment for my MM 252 mig. Is anyone migging aluminum with a MM252? Any advice on the best gun set up? Thanks.Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
Reply:I use a Miller 30A spool gun wth my 252 and it works just great for aluminum. It's especially good for thicker stuff like 1/4" aluminum, but it will do much thinner as long as you keep the gun moving.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:Although I have a MM212, I'm also using the 30A spool gun on aluminum and LOVE IT!!! A great setup. One thing I keep seeing on this forum is re: aluminum with mig: "HOT AND MOVE FAST".
Reply:252 with a 30a works real well. .035 wire for 16 gauge up to 1-4 inch and .047 for heavier. Once your setup may have to tweak the run in settings to keep from frying tips. I use 4043 90 percent of the time, it runs much nicer than 5356 on this machine. I would like to try 4943 but haven't had the chance yet.
Reply:Miller and Airgas sent two people to show off the Dynasty 280DX. At that moment I was suffering from sticker shock with the Dynasty, couldn't wrap my head around the price. They had with them a spool gun, a SP15? it was a mild day in February, the building the MIG is in is only heated when we have a project. It worked very well with my 252, took minutes to set up and change gas to argon. Coached by an expert, it worked beautifully. I bought it, put it on the shelf, I ended up feeling the NEED to buy the Dynasty, ultimately got P.O.d at Airgas Corporation, and bought it from Cyberweld. I've been so impressed with the versatility of the Dynasty, and haven't had a project where the spool gun was warranted. It is still in the box.
