I wondering if anyone had experiance with Hard surfacing disc mower blades. This year the ant hills are terrible and blades are not lasting very long. I have some Stoody wire and also some Wearsheild rods that i use on my dirt moving equipment, but never tried to do any blades this small. Any advice would be appreciated.
Reply:What sizees are the wire, rods and blade body?I have laid hardface on thin edges by backing with carbon, copper or ceramic and later going over the beads with TIG to modify the shape. That was using 1/8" rod, IIRC.The books say to grind a recess and to then fill it, but when the blade behind the edge is only 1/8", when the deposit tends to have a round surface due to surface tension, and the rod or wire one has is sized for working on bulldozers, it does get a bit hard to do unless a large deposit is made and much is ground away to get the sharp edge. The other consideration is what effect the deposit and the heating during the process will have on the shape and strength of the blade. What is OK for a 'thick' rototiller tine might not be safe for a thin, high speed mower blade.
Reply:True.I have hard faced shovels and large screw conveyers. We always laid down some 7018, then hard faced on top of that.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:Oldiron2 - The wire is .045 and the rods are 1/8 and 5/32 .              I was considering clamping the blades down on a backer plate and letting it bleed over and later grind a edge back on them.             The blades are only 1 3/4" wide and just under 3/16" thick , they are double edge. After one side wears down they can be taken off and flipped and will have 1/2 the cutting time as the first edge. Killdozerd11 - A disc mower is a cutter used to cut grass to be baled, they have two blades that are freefloating and are attached to a shaft on a gear that spins at extremely high speed. They have 7 or more cutter heads attached.Last edited by Swamp rat; 05-26-2012 at 08:54 PM.
Reply:Is that gonna affect balance ?  Premature bearing wear ?

Reply:my first choice for this kind of job would be metal spray. there are a number of hardsurface powders to chose from. you can buildup a few thousanth or put it on heavy while doing it. i have done many flail mower cutters and post auger tips and flites. use a old one for practice and new one to finish size. by using this method you can keep the heat to a minium and not lose the base shape. build up and finish grind to sharpen.
Reply:Pro-X-60  - I never thought about using metal spray , i have had a lot of excavator teeth treated. Do you know of a small economical unit , might be worth investing in. Thanks
Reply:I am not sure what is avilable in your area. i have two kinds. one is a smith tourch and the other is a eutectic. their must be some other kinds. check with your local welding supply.  also you might go on line or check out this forum.
