Casting aluminum with an aluminum welding rod?

I saw a guy on youtube put a graphite mold on the welding table, take his welding rod and just bury it in the mold. He must have been keeping a good puddle because it cast in the mold. Pretty neat trick for small parts. No need to fire up a furnace or fire. Reply:No, he cast a cylinder. There are a few guys making different molds.Even still, the round blank he made was able to then me machined for his need. I just thought it was neat. A little trick of sorts.I hear all kinds of stories. But I want to melt and pour some aluminum scrap. Not cans.
