Which is the preferred polarity for 6013 1/8 rod?  Welding on 1/4 carbon steel plates lap/butt/t joints. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Most people here would probably tell you the polarity is 'trash' or 'can.' I personally doubt they'll run much different between DCEP and AC.That having been said, 6010 or 6011 is a much better choice for that kind of work.Currently working as a Paralegal, but still interested in hobby welding.Miller Bobcat 225ntOne- Character Fractions: ¼ ½ ¾ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞
Reply:I have always used electrode positive. 6013 will run on electrode+or-, or on AC, so anyway should work. I only use it on light gauge stuff, so I tend to use the lower end on the amp scale.
Reply:If you have to do 1/4" steel with 6013 which is a low-penetration rod to begin with, I'd say your best bet would be with DCEP since it would net you the best possible fusion depth.  But I've been wrong before.  1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:In general for stick:DC+ most penetrationAC in the middleDC- least penetration Stay in the middle to upper ranges for 6013 and it will run better.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Neither.Use 7018 on DCEPJust a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024

Reply:Awesome stuff thanks for all the advice and all your preferences which will help me make decisions on which polarity I'll use for a job. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Lincoln (who actually makes the stuff) sez AC is the preferred "polarity", DC- the second choice, and DC+ the third. If you're just welding scrap plate for practice, try 'em all, see which one you like best.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:When I use 6013 I run it DC+,  I used to run it AC before I got my new Lincoln Ranger http://www.philswelding.com
Reply:I have run all 3 polarities and have found dc- best for my use. It seems to have the best arc and it leaves the smoothest bead of the 3 polarities. I would run ac second, then dc+ 3rd. I'm sure others will have different opinions, just saying what works best for me. I run them with my bobcat 225 mainly. My shorthood runs them well on either + or -
Reply:That's what the box mentions... DC-Who would've thought manufacturers got it right?
