Before I got my tig I had to mig everything... im a hobbyist and weld all sorts of small stuff around the shop.I can almost tig weld competantly now, and I hate the lack of control I get with MIG.  I tried welding a threaded pipe on a breather the other day and it came out horrible.Folks say tig makes you better at mig.. that may be true from a puddle standpoint.. but now I just use the mig to tack stuff until i can tig it

Reply:Hi Im new in TIG welding. In my shop I find that sum time is faster to weld with TIG. Better? Depending you craftsmanship. My rule is that small welds with TIG all other with MIG. Production weld with MIG.

Reply:Mig is a terrible process.Impossible to make a good weld.Is that what you guys are saying?

Reply:If everything's right, and you Know what you're doing, a MIG weld has just as much "Integrity" as anything else.  BUT, all-too-often because everything is Not "right" (settings, gun angle, etc) and they guy behind the trigger does NOT know what he's doing, they are not... To complicate things, a MIG weld can "look" OK at a glance but hasn't actually gotten "In" to both pieces like it should. Too Many people buy a MIG machine and run around making terrible welds with it.That's a Lot harder to do with TIG. Unless you're really proficient with MIG I have to agree, I have more confidence in that TIG Integrity...   (I know I've seen every bit of the process when I TIG)
Reply:Hilarious, but insightful. Hi all, been away awhile.I am a hobby welder with several vocational school classes and hundred + of hours of hood time in mostly stick, a good bit of mostly scratch start tig (used "real" tig units in class- foot pedal, solenoid, AC, etc.), and some mig at the home shop. I am objectively hard on myself in examining my passes. I find my idle moments mulling over my recent little projects or practice sessions.I consider myself a beginner, maybe intermediate at stick through vertical (my overhead is a bit shaky, literally). It is a great moment of discovery, or insight, when you understand not only what you are doing well, but what you are not doing well and especially, why.Welding is such an incredibly interesting discipline and I think the mold of men who seriously pursue its mastery whether as a profession or hobby personify the "true grit" of rugged individualism and the American exceptionalism that seems to be dying in our culture today.Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 and WP17. 75A AC is for pipe thawing!HH 140 - new addtion 9/2012.I didn't agree, but hoped for Hope and Change.I got change for myself and my family: for the worse. This is the reality of: Barackalypse Now. Again.

Reply:I like both and stink at both.. but my tig skills dont seem to be transferring well.. its all about practice right?
Reply:Tig helped me be more patient and pay attention to the puddle.  I went back to migafter I got my tig machine and the welds were much better right off the bat.
Reply:Few years ago I did some fillet weld break tests. Lincoln L-56, took 29-blows with a 4# hammer.Tig, took 13-blows with a 4# hammer. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
