Looking for a finer Grit Flap disc or sanding disc for a 4-1/2" GrinderFlap discs only come in 120 grit.can't seem to find any Finer discs or a Sanding pad set up with quick change discs.Any one have any links to sites?I don't have a big enough compressor to go with Air tools.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Hook and Loop attachment Ed. Other thread sizes to fit your grinder available as well. Just search under 'gripper backing pad'.http://www.milwaukeetool.com/accesso...nch/49-36-3475Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:Ed, If you were looking for the peel-n-stick type of attachment and Milwaukee or the other manufacturers doesn't offer them, give me a shout and I'll turn you one up on the lathe out of aluminum.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.

Reply:Could well be wrong Ed, but I believe that most small grinders use universal motors that can be speed controlled with a router speed controller.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.

Reply:I use AVOS (Allows View Of Surface) discs on a Milwaukee variable speed 5" grinder. The variable speed is a must when using the non-woven abrasives to prevent overheating them. Grinder was about 140 bucks and the AVOS kits are in the 40 dollar range. I like the fact that you can see through the disc when working. Reply:Roy beat me to the router speed controller recommendation. I was screwing around looking at the AVOS disks and stuff, but I didn't see anything finer than 120 grit.  Norton does have various backing pads that will fit an angle grinder and perhaps a peel-and-stick disc would work.http://www.nortoncomposites.com/uplo...Avos-Discs.pdf
Reply:Ed,Porter Cable makes a random orbit sander polisher that takes the hook and loop sanding pads.Think the problem you're running into is the fact that the standard "grinder" RPM is too high for much finer grit than 120.  The speed causes the grit to load up too quickly to be effective. Not sure about the need for finer grit, but based on your comments, think you'd be better served with a random orbit sander/polisher.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:I've taken my Black and Decker electric RA sander with a hook and look sanding pad on it, and used that to sandwich a piece of 800 to 1200 automotive wet/dry between it and the work surface. I polished some pieces of 1/4 mild steel to a near mirror finish with that method. Just be sure to lift away the sander right as you turn the switch off.PapaLincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175
Reply:Have you looked into these: http://www.mcmaster.com/#nylon-mesh-...-discs/=hy9q7cVery fine finish. They are like scotch brite but much denser.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:I use these http://www.mcmaster.com/#nylon-mesh-...-discs/=hya8j4 on stainless, aluminum and copper, never really tried them on steel. These will buff the metal to almost a mirror and give you a really even, smooth finish.I also save old discs, that are glazed over.  Once ive knocked down what i want with a heavier grit i come back with my old discs and hit it again, very light pressure.  They key is to not press to hard and overheat the disc or the material.
Reply:Ed, I have a Skil RO sander that works very well and seems to be tough. It wasn't too pricey but I don't remember what it costs.                                      MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I use a lot of flapper discs. They wear rather quickly. You could always take a new 120 flapper, run it over some hard material a few times to take some of the agressivenes off it. Then use it for your job.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Tanks' everyone-I actually already had everything I needed - I forgot about a Hook and Loop pad I had because I only used it once and it spun way to fast on my grinder so it has been sitting on the shelf.I made a speed controller and the Combo works perfect.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
