it supposedly works,  the motor and gear head has been covered.
Reply:Do you know the model number of the machine?Does it turn, do all the functions work properly?
Reply:By the looks of it, I'd run as quickly as possible from it. The tailstock appears to have a hydraulic actuated quill, which would lead me to believe it has led a fairly rough life in some manufacturing facility. The compound is heavily rusted. It is an older model Jet that my or may not still be supported by the company...guessing it isn't. Ways are rusted...and that isn't 'surface rust' either. General condition says it wasn't maintained very carefully when it was working and far less when it wasn't.As an owner of a Jet lathe I purchased new, let me say they aren't horrible, but they're no diamond in the rough either. Find yourself an American, Japanese, German or English built lathe from the '40s onward, rebuild whichever you please from that list and you'll have a lathe manufactured out of real cast iron that will probably hold better tolerances than my Jet the day I bought it.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:would it be worth $300??
Reply:$300...yeah, probably. You're going to be looking for parts for that tailstock quill for sure to convert back to manual operation. Do you know enough about lathes to assess the condition? For a parts source, if you decide to get that lathe, try seeing if Grizzly ever sold a similar model. Major parts generally mix and match between the two, minor parts not so much. Grizzly will have a cheaper list price on the parts you may need. Not saying that Grizzly or Jet still supports that model lathe though.Again, it appears there will be a lot of rebuilding to do on that lathe. You might be better off to pass on it and find a better candidate to spend your time, effort and money on.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:I'd be scared to pay anything more than $0.10 per pound.  You could get that money back at the scrapyard should the thing turn out to be a turd (which is what it looks like, and not even a polished one at that).Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:I'd find out scrap value, and if I could get it for less then play with it. Could be fine for bevelling pipe coupons and doing crude work. If not, I'd grab the chuck etc to make a rollout wheel, maybe use the motor for other projects, and scrap the rest.If you aren't familiar with lathes, don't neglect dissecting it for the education. I learned a lot about engines as a youth scrapping them, and the same can apply to any machine. It's nice not to care about reassembling.
Reply:I agree, I wouldnt go much, if any, over scrap price.Making as much progress as a one legged duck in the middle of a pond, just going in circles.

Reply:" I would walk away... too far gone for me taste "I would agree with Brucer. Another reason to not is Jet is horrible to get parts from, bad on new machines, horrible on older machines.
Reply:Its a crying shame what people do to machinery.  It is not a high end machine but a can of grease and a paint brush with tarping over would have saved that brute.  All it is worth is for someone who needs parts for their own Jet lathe.
Reply:I've bought similar condition machines sans rust for right around scrap price.... I'd not be inclined to bother with that pos.  Re-grinding the ways would cost more than the machine was worth were it in serviceable condition to begin with....
