I thought some may find this video of interest. It shows high pressure vessels, such as compressed air and oxygen cylinders being made. Reply:Three minutes in when they were forming the end, that was really cool.Yup
Reply:Thanks for posting that, tanglediver.  Fascinating.awright
Reply:Ditto from me too. Would that same site show what type of material and how it is put in acetylene tanks to hold the acetone?                    Thanks again,                                          MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Originally Posted by tanglediverThe instability of the contents of an acetylene tank is the only thing I know about them, other than simple operation of the torch. Their is a semi-solid binding agent within the tank that has some purpose that I am unaware of. Don't run them down to zero pressure, because then you suck acetone, and that is a bad thing. That's all I know about that at this point.Maybe they use a funnel to get the stuff inside, huh?
Reply:That is very cool. Good find!'Kapok' was one of the substances used for DA cylinders, probably something synthetic these days. A quick google furnished THIS

Reply:Cool video and educational. Years ago acetylene cylinders had soft plugs in the bottom that were supposed to melt if the cylinder was in a fire and release the pressure or so my LWS told me and the owner was pretty sharp so I believed him. I haven't looked at the bottom of an acetylene cylinder in years so I don't know if they still have the plugs or not.Years ago a welding shop in Eunice, NM was leveled in an explosion and it was blamed on an acetylene cylinder. Everyone was outside the shop when it happened and no one was injured. No explanation of what caused the cylinder to explode was ever given. I doubt the volunteer fire department had the expertise to determine what actually happened.
Reply:I believe there's also a formula to follow when setting the flow.  Too high a volume outflow is also a dangerous thing to do with acetylene. This is sometimes encountered when using a rosebud tip that's too large for your tank capacity.I forget the flow rate.  Does anybody know what it is?(Oil + Oxygen = BOOM ! )
Reply:farmersamm,Max draw rate for acetylene cylinders is 1/7.  If your tip draws more than that, you need:- a bigger tank,- multiple tanks manifolded together,- multiple bigger tanks manifolded together.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:That video brings back some memories , I worked at this plant in the early 90's . It is a pretty cool process .
