I was practicing my 6G GTAW a few weeks ago on 2" XXS SA106. This is the first time I actually welded a coupon the whole way out. I also was time restricted so I welded without stopping so I know it was very hot. I am not 100% certain but I think my amps were 90-115. I used 3/32" ER70S2 and 1/8" 2% Thoriated and E3 with a gas lens. Anyone have any tips? I know I need more hood time especially on my left side.-Jonathan
Reply:Looks good for first attempt. No undercut on the top edge considering a hot tube. Guess you know you should bring the bottom edge of your top pass slightly lower for a better profile. Suggest you practice running top passes on cheaper 2"std. pipe to build consistency.
Reply:You did ok. You just need to get some hood time in to get the muscle memory. being in odd positions for 6g takes a bit to get used to and acquainted with the movements. Proper positioning and bracing is everything when running long welds in a strange position, try setting up and making a few dry runs to make sure you have good movement and torch angle through the whole motion. It really helps to find a comfortable stance and body position also.... Fatigue is a killer!Looking good for your first full shot!Good luckReal welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
Reply:I'm no Tig welder by any stretch of the imagination! I'm sure you have one, but if not! Get one of Jody's Tig fingers. It was a big help to me. Reply:Thanks for the reply guys!!! OldSparks,I have some sch 80 as well and have been practicing when I get free time. I also have a few pipes that I just work on cover passes/positioning on as well. I am curious though, per ASME IV, is there anything mentioned about the overlapping? Dantheharleyman99,I am actually thinking of revamping my test fixture. I found that for the tig pipes it crammed me up against the table. I also had my PAPR helmet on so that took up extra room on my back. I couldn't agree more on the dry runs, I think I need to do even more. I believe dry runs should help me get down that muscle memory on my left side eventually.CEP,Yep, have the mandatory TIG Finger however, I didn't use it for this run. Was to awkward because of the short piece of pipe and the jig.Guys I really appreciate the help. It is amazing how much we can learn if we are only willing to ask!!-Jonathan |
