I have participated in 2 trade days in Bastrop this year...... The first was in the Summer and the second was last month...... During these shows I am amazed at some of the people that come by.....Some are professional welders who work in the trade for a living..... some are armchair welders...... some only know MIG........ some are students in high school just getting into the trade..... A variety for sure.....Often i will have folks come by and ask if I can build something for them..... sometimes I say no, sometimes I say yes...... From the yes response, I have about a 50% close ratio on the sale of the project.......A guy named Bill came by the booth in the Summer.... we chatted for awhile and he took my card.... normal process........ we emailed back and forth a couple times and then he fell off the face of the earth for months...... then one day.... before my second show... he emails me asking if I can build him something to hold his firewood for his smoker....A few emails back and forth with napkin drawings and such.... we settled on a design...... On my second show he came by to deliver the funds for me to get started.......I told him I had not bent tubing or pipe before so his project would be the first.... and my price to him was representative of my lack of skill in that piece of the job........As soon as he paid me... i bought the material and a HF bender..... immediately putting me in the red on the project....4 - 8 foot sections of 1" Sch 40 pipe and 4' of 4X4 1/8" wall tube.......PICS......I started bending and at first made bends that required three joints to be welded to complete a set...... the next set I got better and only required one joint to be welded.......You can see in this pic how the two pieces in front have a joint in the middle and then again on the sides..... the two in the back have only a weld in the top to join the two halves..... Ideally these would be bent properly to have no welded joints....... I'm not that skilled yet in bending pipe......This is also the first time I have attempted to weld pipe this small....... many stops and starts..... wavy enough to cause concern so I ended up grinding all the welds down to both cover up the hot mess of my TIG welding and to attempt to create the appearance of a continuous bent pipe.....NEXT.....Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:At the customer's request he wanted something in the middle to keep some of his smaller pieces of wood from falling through the sides......It turns out that this idea worked well to bring each piece into the same size... as my welds and bends were not perfect which created up to .75" of variance between each unit......I bought some flat stock and cut them all the same size...... requiring use of both a clamp to pull in the oversized pieces and the use of a bottle jack to push out on the undersized pieces.....From here I put some 4X4 pieces of wood in to act as a jig and tacked them up.....Here is the basic idea......I put gussets on one of them but it created some outward pull..... I'm thinking of scrapping the gusset idea as the wood won't create much outward pressure......Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:For a HF bender..... I'm happy with it.....As much bending as I'm likely to do it does the job.......Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Fexal as always you did a good job. I enjoy seeing your projects.
Reply:I used to stack lots of firewood using landscape timbers on the ground and a single T-post at each end.For support for sideways forces on the posts I tied the tops of posts to each other with wire. Each post supported the other.Supported many a cord of Texas live out this way with no issues. Would work for your rack as well. Reply:That's not a bad idea. Right now I'm using old T 1-11 on the pallets to contain the wood at a friends place. Wire mesh is probably a simpler way to go..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
