Reply:sorry , lookin at your pic, your the wrong race and color to be in sac. best bet is to get a bucket of paint ( any color except white - prefertably black) , and go to nearest county facility , you can make more there than trying to work for a livingLast edited by 123weld; 01-14-2016 at 03:41 AM.
Reply:There are times when it is easy to get in a union if you have worked in the same field for a while. You need to contact the local union halls ( which are not very local anymore most are more like regions instead of locals ) . There have been 3-4 times in the last 5 years that they have been short handed and will take on new members with equivalent experience. Some even have journeyman tests. I have gotten letters from my union asking me to come back to work without losing my pension. I even got one once asking me if know of anyone qualified that wanted to join. Most people just sit and complain instead of hitting the pavement. You can't get in a union if you don't try. There are several unions that use welders, I would go around to all of them and drive them crazy till you get in one. There is Iron workers , Pipe fitters, Boiler Makers, Millwrights ( they are in the Carpenters Union ) . If you want to weld all the time go for the pipe fitters first, the others you will do other things besides weld.

Reply:Originally Posted by old-iron-habitYou are correct. There is so much misconception about the unions. I, like you have been asked to come back to work numerous times since I retired without losing my retirement benifit. They just add to my pension each time I work. Most people try to get in the unions when they had lost their previous job when the economy is in the tank. When the economy is better and the union doors are open they are satisfied where they are and won't go. I have been a union member for 46 years and have never looked back. I earned a lot of money and made my employer much more. Many think union employees are slackers. Nothing is further from the truth. The slackers don't make it long with any work regularity. We got paid more because we are better trained and produce a good quality product. Less than 15% of union work is Davis Bacon government work so the myth about all the government union work is bull. And last and maybe most important, union employees negiotate wages and benifits as a group so no employeer can squeeze one employee against the other to get them to work for less. If you are ambitious, honest, and willing to do a days work, I would recommend you join a union and if the door is not open today, keep an eye open and watch for the opportunity. Could be a very good move for you.
Reply:why would you set a goal of $25 if you are living in Cali? Seems like geographical poverty level. You'd be much better off in the long run and have alot more $$ by spending your energy designing a product that is made for the general public that involves metal/welding in its manufacture. You do atleast have the non-union gumption going for you but I'd encourage you to think bigger.

Reply:In the year 2000 I was working at the Port of Oakland, building a container ship dock. I was out running around, probably picking up rigging for the guys. I heard on the radio, if you are making $16.00 an hour living in Sacramento. That is considered working poverty. Reply:Union work in the valley for a pipefitter is going to be around 45 plus bennies I do believe total package maybe 65-70. Selling yourself short if you consider your self a skilled tradesmen. Third generation UA fitter here and wouldn't have anywhere near the compensation I do for my work if it wasn't without them. Hell in the Bay Area our first year apprentices start at 20 bucks and hour and only goes up from there.

Reply:I wouldn't even leave my house for $25/hr. Getting into a union is not difficult. You need to be a good worker. Clean, drug free and show up every day on time. If the union has work available, they will take qualified people to fill the job. You may have to work on probation when you first start but if you have good skills and do quality work, the word quickly gets back to the hall and they open the doors to you to become a full member.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

There is still a strong mofia in that part of the country and they are imbedded deep into the unions as well as most other areas of the work segment there. I could tell you some true stores that would be on par with some movies I'v seen. I would be the first to tell you everything is not great in unions just like politics and anything else that can and does control money or power. There is always going to be crooks anywhere those 2 things are found. There is no good answer in the real world, there is just a choice between bad and worse bad. I will say there are majority of good hard working people in unions just like in the non union side. In a perfect world I would not like being union for the same reasons I do not like paying taxes. You do not get to choose where your money payed in is spent. The biggest thing to remember in a union is
The union might get you a job but your skills and work ethic is what will keep you the job. If you are a slacker it won't matter if your union or not, you will not be able to keep a job that is handed to you. The unions are not a cure all . They just give you a wider opportunity than a single employer can or will. I personally have never een told how to vote by the union, now they try to push their candidate but I have never been threatened in any way to vote one way or the other. I actually believe in equal opportunity like right to work laws invoke. Now thay would be sacralidge to any die hard union .
