I was browsing my pictures and came across a home improvement projects I did.  I thought it would be interesting to see other people's projects they have done whether it be welding, carpentry, painting etc...  I don't have all the finished pics, just ones during construction.A deck I built for my wife's aunt and uncle.  I had to build it around the concrete step that was already there.  A bunch of notching and shimming, but overall a quick job, and a quick paycheck.   An add-on to my grandparent's house that I helped my wife's grandfather build.  New laundry room and the the roof was extended out for a shaded patio.
Reply:Building a flower bed (no, I don't swing a hammer that way, I was picking it up!)We put some annual florist's poppies in it and it worked great!  We now have some sweet peas in it since the other flowers finished their season out and dried up.

Reply:tortis, that is awsome!  As simple as it is, I like that bbq cover a lot.  I am going to steel that idea and stick it in the back of my brain for later.

Reply:Ok, my other post was supposed to be funny....Here is an entertainment center I built for my wife. She wanted it because she saw it in a model home and said WHY CANT YOU BUILD THAT?  So I did. We painted the colored design on it together and we get a lot of compliments so I guess it looks nice. Sorry, I lost the detail when I resized the picture. She loves it. As you can see I finished it in time for Christmas. We spent a few years finding an HDTV to fit there as well as we wanted. It is no longer empty and is filled with pictures and knicknacks as well as the kids Wii, PS2 and games and DVDs. The carpet in the picture actually was pepto bismol pink. It was in the house when we bought it. We no longer have carpet at all. Reply:MrRodeoCC, These are the nicest projects I've ever seen.  I did 9 years in the AF as a TMO troop.  Got out, my husband is a helicopter pilot and he just started making some of these "plaques & cases" yours are really awesome.  We're stationed at Camp Lejuene for a Marine exchange.  It is completely opposite of the AF.  Certainly an adjustment for us.  Anyway, great work.Laura MM 180Chop SawDewalt grinderhelpful husband

Reply:Tom1313, that is an AWSOME entertainment system!  Do you build those for a living?  I saw you are in Oregon, we are looking for a quality dresser, want to make some $$?Thanks WelderBoy but no more commission gigs for me, too much "how much?"P'sCab was $320 for materials and it took the buyer six weeks to pick it up. The entertainment cab was built because anything even close was $4k retail and that's criminal.I think I'm sticking to yard art.Tom Attached Images
Reply:Nice work Tom, but I hear ya about the "How Much?" I can usually get a price estimate after I draw my plans for building it, but people dont want to pay what it cost if you were trying to make a living doing it. I'd love to do it for a living, but being able to make a living at it a whole different thing. Costs of tools, consumables, wear and tear, facility costs, etc all mean labor costs have to go up well beyond minimum wage.
Reply:Good idea for a thread. Maybe others have something to add. I think I can come up with some, even.
Reply:Here's a patio block walkway I made a couple of months back. It is 14' long and 4' wide. There is a concrete sub-base under the blocks to keep it all in line, and the blocks were set into the concrete while it was still wet, so they are there to stay. These go up to the front porch steps I made a few years ago. I will eventually extend it around the corner to the other set of steps I built on the side of the house. There are 30 80lb. bags of Kwikcrete under there for good. Attached Images

Reply:I found some pictures of the retaining wall that is next to the walkway I posted earlier. I needed to build this so I could remove the sand ramps the moving company made to bring the house in. Otherwise it would have eventually killed those two trees, and I was wanting to preserve the shade. This was my first attempt at any kind of masonry project. I think it turned out well considering. Believe it or not, but there IS some welding in THIS project. I used 1" bar grating in the footing of the wall as my reinforcing steel for the concrete. I had to weld sections of it together to get the length I needed. I don't believe this footing is going to break up in this capacity. Attached Images

Reply:Originally Posted by DSWI've got to teach you how to do stamped concrete. Much nicer and easier to work with as well as more options. It's really not all that hard. Toughest thing is getting a hold of the stamps, though there are plenty of places that rent them and they are getting cheaper all the time. Basic block/brick patterns really don't even need stamps. A simple textured skin and some home made chisels would work for something that narrow, though it would be slower. You don't even need to cut in grout lines. Some prefer that "rock" look you get when you just do seamless mats.
Reply:If you were closer I'd be glad to show up and help, I've still got access to a lot of the stamp patterns, tools and some of the colors and releases. I doubt your offer includes an all expense paid round trip ticket though.  Louisiana is one of the few states I haven't managed to get to yet. Seriously if you have questions I'll be glad to answer any I possibly can if the idea interests you. One nice thing about stamp work is it can "hide" a lot of flaws since you are making the surface irregular to begin with. Originally Posted by Bistineau I have a 3 cubic foot concrete mixer already, or else I would not have gotten the slab for the walkway done by myself.
Reply:I don't intend to use the blocks for the rest of the walk, but would like to color it the same and possibly use stamps to create the same/similar pattern. I likened to have killed myself doing all this in one day by myself. Between mixing, spreading, leveling and setting the blocks, too. I did not anticipate having to use 2400 lbs. of concrete, more like half of that is what I had mistakenly calculated. I had to send the wife to the building supply for 10 more bags when I saw how far the crete was going and how far I still had to go. She asked me, "can't you go get it? I don't know what to get". I sent an empty sack with her, and told her to get 10 more full ones. I have enough to work with till you get back, to keep a wet edge. If I had gone, I would have had the start of a cold joint to deal with when I got back. More than an hour round trip with the time at the store, too. As it was, I was done with the crete on hand and was setting some more blocks when she arrived back home. But I got it all done.DSW, is there any way to restore the original pictures from page one of this thread? I would like to see them if possible, as I am sure others would, too.Last edited by Bistineau; 12-09-2014 at 08:51 PM.

Reply:A pergola and privacy screen that I built at our old house. Cookie cutter mold neighborhood mostly filled with plastic people. Ironically, when we moved into that house, I had a Pow-con SM200, torches and a small handful of hand tools to do small jobs. I sold the welder and torches within a year of moving in because I didn't want to be "that guy", as the lots were sub 1/4 acre.. We moved away from there a little over a year ago, and damn glad that we did.We built it in an effort to tell ourselves that we can stay and be happy, but ended up selling the house within 6 months after building the pergola and moved to the country. The little old lady who bought the house promptly ripped it down and built a screened in porch to replace it. Can't blame her though, cause that's really what we wanted, but just couldn't justify the cost post construction..This was eventually stained to match the deck color.Attachment 932841Attachment 932851Attachment 932861Attachment 932871Last edited by NicheFab; 12-10-2014 at 05:42 AM.Reason: It's early.. Reply:This is a project I did for my brother in Isaquah. The bids he got to do the job were all over $30,000, so I told him I would take a week, come over and do it for him( My BIL volunteered to go with me and help).I had him take measurements, then figured out a materials list for him to price. When he told me how much it would cost to buy it there , I nearly had a stroke.I told him I could save him more than $8,000 buying it here, and renting a truck to take it over there. My brother,BIL, and I with help on the weekend from my nephew and a friend demoed the old and built the new in 6 loooong days.I had never done a project with my brother before and while it was a lot of work, it was also a great time. Here are some pics. The old decking and most of the structure had rotted and had to be replaced.New framing
Reply:Here are the finished deck pics.
Reply:A few months after completing the deck in Isaquah, we decided we would do ours.My brother from Isaquah and my BIL from here helped, so with their recently experienced help this smaller project went together in a couple of days.
Reply:Tool Junkie, did you get to acquire any new tools for these deck builds, or did y'all already have all the tools you needed? Those decks turned out real nice BTW. I might would be looking at doing a roof, over at least a portion of the last deck for some summer time shade and also so you could use it during rainy weather. Now you need to build you a nice BBQ/smoker to go out there.
