so the 17 series air cooled was no good for the aluminum work i do. When i bought the welder the guy threw in a 20 series water cooled torch, but no cooler. I ended up sourcing all the parts and building my own, procon series 1 pump, a.o smith 1/3hp motor. My question is about the motor. This is the same motor i have, my main question is the L1 and L2 hook ups. L1 says "line" which is the 120v source, and L2 says ground. So thats how i hooked it up. It works, and pumps fine, no weird noises, but is it normal to not have the white common wire hooked up to anything? There's only 2 lugs inside the motor for wires. This is the motor I have.http://www.ebay.com/itm/PROCON-PUMP-...item231cc9998dLast edited by claymans13; 08-01-2012 at 11:13 PM.ESAB MigMaster 275Miller Econotwin HFMiller Syncrowave 250

Reply:Stop right there!  Disconnect the motor and start over.Terminal L-1 is indeed the line or 120 VAC input.  BLACK wireTerminal L-2 is the common  WHITE wireThe remaining green wire from your lead should ground to the frame of the motor.  The reason it is running now is that both the white and ground leads connect to the "common bus" inside the breaker box.  However in the case of a short where the "line" voltage goes to the case, the motor frame will be electrified and the breaker may not trip.On my home-brew cooler I used a stainless pan and lid for the tank and bounded everything (motor frame, pan, and cover) to the green lead.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches

Reply:On that motor label, they refer to "line" and "grounded line".  I guess that's their way of referencing Hot and Neutral.  The Neutral is the line that's "grounded" back at the panel or source."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
