As you probably already know I just got my weldanpower 150 running good. Well something hit me and I was wondering what you guys may think. Let me start by saying I dont really plan on doing this so its all hypothetical. What if someone where to take the weldan power 150 and slap a higher horse power and highe rpm motor onto it. Then have it set for 2 differant governed rpm. One for welding and one for power. Then you should be able to acomplish the 60 herts standard for powering and bump up the juice to maybe 200amps for welding. That seems to me to be a doable jump and a great improvement over stock.I got the idea while checking out a weldanpower 225 with the 16 hp briggs motor. The motor looks almost the same so it got me thinking. What do you guys think?
Reply:yeah they call it a governor that runs the engine at set idles one for power one for welding, miller has it so should lincoln, but when it senses a load it automatically kicks up the rpms to a set limit so it doesnt all go boom..
Reply:Hi Skeluhtor, I had a 150 but it never ran well for me, needed some repairs, so I sold it and got the 225 so I'd have DC mainly for 6010.  That has worked out for me, but it is bigger, heavier and noisier for sure... the Briggs is one more noisy engine Duane would probably be the go to guy to discuss mods... he knows a LOT re: welder design and various models performance.  I have a vision I see a late model Toyota Tacoma with a flatbed and some kinda engine driven welder up there with tanks, and air maybe,  and some metal and consummables and ~TOOLS  ~.  Add some neat boxes to hold all the goodies for your tasks and that would be a tidy rig, efficient and capable.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:Thanks Papalion do you do psyphic reading on the side? If not then you should cause you would make a killing  I am already keeping my eye out for a weldanpower 225 it should fit right onto my trailer sidways instead of long ways like the 150 is now. I have seen them kicking around and know I could get one for $4-500(asking $600) I wouldnt jump on one unless it was around $2-300 though. I got my weldanpower 150 for $200. I figure I can turn it around for $400(people want more than that just for a generator here) with some fresh paint. But thats all off topic. Thanks for the governor tip I figured that would be the easy part. Point was the stock briggs and stratton motor is rated for something like 3600rpm. So its not a good idea to just up the governor to get the desired amperage.  I'm not gonna do the math but you would obviously have to be revving higher to achieve more welding amperage. Maybe have to upgrade the bearing on the generator side to handle the higher rpm?So maybe theres some sort of horizontal shaft engine that is rated to run at the higher rpm and can mate up relatively easily. Obviously it should be fine to run at underated rpms. I have seen small motors in the ball park for this idea used on craigslist for about $50-$150. If for $50 and some elbow grease I could up the welding output 50+ amps I think it could be a fun little project. But like I said before, its all hypothetical.
Reply:The problem with your hypothetical modification is that higher output amperage is a matter of 'copper'.  More copper (or aluminum) in the rotor and stator windings equals more output amperage.  A higher HP engine and/or more RPM would simply allow one to overload a unit above its design output - until as tanglediver suggested - you let the smoke out of the generator/alternator.  Not only that, if high enough, excessive speed can/will cause a rotor to self-destruct - bigger bearing or not.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Duane, you hit on exactly what I was gonna say.  Increase in RPM will only change the frequency, will not up the amps because there is only so much copper available for that to happen.  Increasing the freq will do nothing to help as far as weld power goes, other than maybe stabilizing the arc a little better.  Unfortunately the only way  to up the amps is get a bigger generator section and hook it up, but then you will require more HP to turn it efficiently to produce the rated output.  Looks like a never ending cycle of upgrade to support an upgrade.  I would just save the money, and sell what I got to get the bigger unit and be done with the tinkering altogether.  Just my .02.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:Makes perfect sense thanks
