So I was thinking of starting a business that specializes in welding and refinery turnaround/maintenance. What kind of welding equipment would I be looking for and what would this cost me?
Reply:Well I'll be the one to kick this one off.If one plans on "specializing" in a particular field, that one needs to know enough about the field to not have to ask this type of question.Just curious - have you ever been in a refinery and aware of what takes place during a turnaround?BTW, welcome to the forum. Reply:I would suggest taking a trip down to your local Harbor Freight and get a 110volt mig.
Reply:Well I am 16 and I would say I'm already waaaaaaay ahead of myself but thanks for the advice anyway.
Reply:Study the trades, work in the trades, then start a business. The future for the young looks pretty good, http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...897409182.htmland since there is no "instant" way into the trades the earlier you start learning and studying the better.I don't just mean formal school, but relentlessly hunting info and experience.

Reply:Briggs,Still there? I hope so.Yes, the additional information in your second post would have resulted in a different response and I hope you now understand why I said/asked what I did. The last thing I want to do is discourage someone - especially a young person - from pursuing their dreams or what they enjoy doing. So let me start over. As has been suggested already, get involved in the industry, learn as much as you can by observation and - yes - asking questions.Consider a welding school or at the very least some classes. I'm 2 hours away and don't know your area but do you know of any trade schools near by that offer such? I trust you're still in school. Does your school offer trades courses that include welding? Was sincere regarding the welcome and do wish you the best in your endevors.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Thanks Guys, I know my school has a Ag mechanics class but I just use my dad's welder to learn the basics. Anything I do like starting my own business might be like 6-8 years down the road. Thanks for all the advice.- Briggs
Reply:Take an Ag Mech class if available.Just welding isn't enough. Learning mechanical systems is vital to repairing and building them. |
