This pictorial documents a King salmon I was commissioned to create. The work was done during the summer/fall of 2014. This sculpture now resides in Pacific Palisades, CA. Attached Imageshttp://www.facebook.com/LockhartMetalArthttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Grumpy...44306259043484
Reply:The body is mild steel sheet metal. Once I cut out a fishy shape, I tig'd the perimeter. Next, I tig'd a 3/8" black pipe onto the flat shape, and added compressed air. I split the metal balloon, and refined the shape on a stump form.http://www.facebook.com/LockhartMetalArthttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Grumpy...44306259043484
Reply:Next, I tig'd the body halves together, and started tacking scales to it. The scales are small mild steel slugs from a piercing press. Attached Imageshttp://www.facebook.com/LockhartMetalArthttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Grumpy...44306259043484
Reply:An early shot of the head. It's drip by drip stainless steel. Attached Imageshttp://www.facebook.com/LockhartMetalArthttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Grumpy...44306259043484

Reply:The finished King salmon. For the base, I hand cut, sanded, and polished an oval base. The dimensions are; 6"x8"x26" ... and 19.5 pounds.  Attached Imageshttp://www.facebook.com/LockhartMetalArthttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Grumpy...44306259043484

Reply:Can you describe the "drip by drip" method? Are you adding filler to  puddle, then letting it cool, and doing it repeatedly? Seems like that would be the way to build up a 3D structure....how did you keep the head from having pits and imperfections if it was a series of drips and drops?
Reply:That's badass!Nice job!Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.

Reply:Beautiful work Grumpy. You used compressed air instead of nitrogen? Ive seen two stroke pipes repaired using that method. The man said air changes pressure when heating so he used nitrogen. Looks like you had no problems.BTW, did you modify your vise in the first pic? Whats its purpose?
