I build cattle guards and have a source of for cheap pipe....trouble is it is plastic  lined.   The pros of using this pipe are as I see it the price and the pipe should never rust out from the inside.   The cons being the smoke and smell which I can manage with fans and plugs.  I am wondering if there are any other cons?I have talked with old timers (welders) and they say it is good pipe if you can manage the smoke.Any one here have any opinions or warnings about welding lined pipe?

Reply:A supplied air breathing system and weld it with one finger pointed at the sky in honor of the EPA.Mr. HE
Reply:In general some degree of caution should be used when working with any kind of used pipe.   There's quit a bit of used process piping out there that still has the residue of some pretty nasty stuff in it.   Over the years I've read more than one write up in safety journals about people that got poisoned or otherwise hurt due to nasty stuff in used pipe they were trying to use to build things out of.   One case I remember reading about involved a guy using a torch to cut up some pipe that had been used to carry liquid sulphur.    He was cutting along and had a big old squirt of molten sulphur get ejected on to him that caused him some serious  3rd degree burns.
Reply:The back of my throat started burning and blistered just reading this.  The plastic lined stuff is right up there with the red lead primer from the 60's and 70's.  Unless you are 85+ years old, a three pack a day smoker, and pull one of those little green oxygen tanks around (not connected to your torch) forget about it.  Just forget about it.
