Hello, OK, so I haven't done any aluminum welding in about 3 years- After a few practice welds I gave it a shot on this piece and you can see the results for yourself.Details: Millermatic 211Autoset, Miller 100 series spool gun, 100% argon set @ 30. The welder was set at the recommended settings for 1/4" material. .035 4043 wire, 6061 stock (3/4" x 3/4" & 1/4" x 3")- new and clean . As far as my welding technique, I was shooting for a 10 degree push angle, 3/4" stickout and a slight weave action to create the fillet weld.So what do you think? I did do a little pre-heat with a bernzomatic propane torch, but I'm sure it wasn't enough... From the 2 pics- I started on the right side of the right pic and traveled let to the left side of the left pic. It was a cold start and took some time (~1") to heat up and settle in. I was pretty happy the way the weld ended up at the end (left pic) Thoughts? Questions:Cold start pre-heat: how much should I pre-heat? What temp should I be shooting for?Cold start in the case of the pictures: Since the piece goes from relatively cold to very hot, would it be better to crank up the welder settings in the beginning to help with cold start issues? Maybe dial it back a bit when it heats up?No stacked dimes look?- the weld is smooth- should I be concerned? Should I be trying for a more TIG-like weld? If so, how.Soot- I'm using new/clean aluminum and a dedicated stainless wire brush, I still get some soot, but it easily cleans off. Should I be concerned? How can I do a cleaner job?Pulse MIG- If I win the lottery, would a pulse MIG be that much better? Attached Images
Reply:Try doing circles. If i were at work i could make you a video lol. Anyway... Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk
Reply:Watch the puddle and make a circle forceing the puddle down and then left and up making a clockwise "e", which then watch the puddle wet into the top plate. Do this before u move left and it will improve the look or ur starts. Using ur same setup myself and thats the only piece of advice i can offer. I myself have problems making good welds with that spoolgun, but most of the time i can get a "stack of dimes".Dynasty 200DX   (2014)Millermatic 211 (2015)Optrel 864   (2014)Smith Medium duty MBA 30510 (Xmas 2014)Tennsmith 16ga 4ft finger brake (2015)Trailblazer 325 EFI and excel Thermal dynamics Cutmaster 82Miller maxtron 450
