12" thick block walls with rebar inside and poured full of concrete. 17'X13' with a thimble for a wood heater and and air conditioner.  this will be for a reloading room as well. The vault door I worked on today is coming along pretty well. Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:Wow, thats cool!  Can we get some more pics of how you made the door locking mechanism?    Also, were you expecting trouble that day...?
Reply:pangea; pretty nice looking safe room. was there much deflection in the door after fabrication and did you get welding splatter on your gat?i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:MMMmmmm.... with the external padlock tab you can also lock somebody inside, or somebody can lock you
Reply:Looking real good!  I'd love to have that in my backyard.
Reply:That is my first concern  also . I do not like a door some one can lock you in from the out side .

Reply:That's a pretty serious door!

Reply:I still have to box the hasp to prevent tampering. If you put a countersunk screw and nut in the hole that the lock goes through, they can't get a lock in it. I'm not that concerned about someone locking me in.  Why would someone do that anyway?  Some of you need to loosen your tinfoil hats a bit.The roof is 6" thick with a web of 5/8" rebar on 16" centers as well as mesh wire. The roof and walls fill were poured at the same time. Two turn tables and a microphone.

Reply:Open carry wouldn't fly in my neck of the woods. If you're standing in line at the local convenience store with a gun displayed on your hip, the crackhead behind you will bust a cap in the back of your head so you're not an issue when he robs the place. And then he'll take your gun from your cold dead body on the way out of the store. Concealed is the only way to go. Reply:I like it I too would prefer the door to open inward because of storm damage, but it's just personal preference.Open or concealed carry are both legal here. Most of the time mine is hidden, sometimes it's able to be seen - again just personal choices.Nice project Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

I didn't post these pictures to hear your opinions on how I dress. You girls are going to give yourselves the diarrhea if all you do is snipe at the fashion sense of others.I wanted to share my work on a DOOR for a STORM SHELTER and I get a bunch of gas from  short pants wearing lollypop lickers that think everything made out of concrete and steel is some zombie bunker or spank room. Two turn tables and a microphone.

Reply:Nice job on the shelter.Do you have bearings pressed into the hinge plates because that door looks really heavy to move?TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Thanks for the post for the storm shelter.    Looks like you have put a lot of thought into the shelter.    I have been working on one off and on for the last year constructed out of a 8 ft diameter tank 24 ft long. I am very impressed with your unit since it will serve several purposes.  I really like the big old door on your unit.  Would you be kind enough to post some close up photos of the cam action.   Great looking job and I hope you never have to use it for tornadoes and  only for reloading.
Reply:Gee a simple remark on a lock that can't be opened from the inside and all hell break loose. Respectfully sir, you are doing a fine job, the latch question i would have mentioned on any kind of construction that does not have an alternate way out, if i have to work in a fridge or any kind of room having only one door i make sure to padlock open the door and i'm not clostrophobic..Just common sense (slept a few times in my car's trunk by necessity ...) As for the "dress code" i think it started with someone talking about tinfoil hats
Reply:I'm just wondering if you had ever considered having it swing to the inside. Did the thought ever cross your mind about the aftermath of a severe storm and being pinned in by something against the door on the outside that you can not reach to move? What's the plate thickness on the door skin? I guess if you keep a cutting torch in there, then getting out after a bad storm might not be such a big deal. Just make sure the acetylene tank don't leak.Last edited by Bistineau; 10-05-2014 at 08:53 PM.

Reply:I built mine out of a tank  and it is under ground, just put a standard door in it opening inward,  but one of the things I did do is on the back side of the tank there was hole in it about 30 round on the end,  I cut a plate and bolted it on, and with a chain hung a wrench on one of the bolts,   and a pry bar and a short shovel,  so if one was trapped  one could dig out a few feet of soil, and the generator shed is built much like your block building but using commercial steel doors,  concrete and rebar filled block and a reinforced, concrete roof deck,  the intent was to be tornado resistance, the generator  building is next to the well,
Reply:Nice wotk.  Outside hinges?

Reply:I like it, don't get bad storms up here too often.
Reply:That's a good job on the door and reloading room. If nothing else, there can be a substantial investment contained in a well equipped reloading room that needs some sort of vault like protection."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:If you install a keyed lock so that the bolt interferes with the door pin lock mechanism, it would work like a "real" safe doorand not be as fragile as padlocks can be.Plus it looks cooler and you can still work the door and lock from the inside. You can always dig out a little escape tunnel too if the door gets stuck, but then I watched a lot of Hogan's Heroes when I was a kid.
Reply:Some one needs to work on their sense of humor a little bit.
Reply:You guys got it all wrong... I am pretty sure his MIG welder BEHAVES at the sight of what he is carrying... No more cold starts or else...!!!

Reply:We have so called "safe rooms" here in Oklahoma.  They're reinforced rooms ABOVE GROUND, built into the houses. After the EF-5 that went thru OKC last Summer/Spring, the news chopper pilot (an old time native Okie) looked for any "safe rooms" still standing.  There were none that he could see.Only safe place in a twister is below ground by my reckoning.I do think the fabrication is very nice though."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauI have thought before of build a block wall and filling it with concrete. Except my idea would be to dry stack it(no mortar joints), then fill with concrete. Anybody looking at it would not think it would hold up, not knowing it was filled with crete. I just wonder if it would be any weaker doing it that way vs. the way Pangea has his with mortared joints. I am meaning putting in rebar in all the holes with interconnecting horizontal rebar tied to the vertical rebar.
Reply:The outer door skin is 3/16" and the inner skin is 1/8".  Haven't put the inner skin on yet.i looked at dry stacking my blocks and was that >< close to doing it until i measured my door casing. It doesn't work out without cutting some blocks and I didn't want to have to do that. The pole in the middle of the room stays.  My concrete man said that it wasn't necessary but I put it anyway for my own piece of mind. i call it a stripper pole just to piss off my wife.the concrete man put a "frisco finish" on the roof and said that it wouldn't need any sealer. Don't know what that means. I'm going to let it ride for awhile and maybe later put some truck bed liner stuff on it.  haven't decided yet.Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:Interesting video, think it replicates the truckload of diesel and fertilizer in the Murrah bombing??  Probably not.  Reality shows generally suck, not much relation to actual realityMonolithic pour is probably strongest.  Cinder blocks are known to be pretty weak, even when filled with concrete"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:[QUOTE=7A749;4770581]I think it's awesome.See, the .45 is just in case any zombies (or idiots with a death wish ) try and sneak on Pangea's property when he's not looking. When I lived in Vegas, I had mine on me even on a walk to the mailbox or the laundry room in the apartment complex I lived at. I generally answered the door with it in my hand too.Just in case of zombies, you know. That may happen ! Even the concrete finisher is packin !      Post 37 second picture on left.
