I want to get a proper setup for using propane for heating and bending. I have multiple oxygen and propane cylinders. I plan on getting one of the cheap China made oxygen regulators and a Propane specific fuel regulator. I already have a "T" rated hose set. So, I think I have all that covered, but I'm having trouble figuring out what torch body and rosebud to get. Any suggestions ?
Reply:I've found you have to watch some of the torch body/ rosebud combos for propane as they can get pretty huge quick as many are designed for preheating large beams and so on.I've narrowed my search down to a couple of combos...Victor 100 size body and 6MFN/8MFN rosebudSmith MH100 with either a a MT 603 or MT 615 rosebudSmith MH200 with either a a ST 615 or MT 815 rosebudI haven't been able to narrow down torch bodies or rosebuds for other manufacturers.I'll be curious to see what others suggest on this. I've found trying to narrow down the possible options quite difficult as most companies don't seem to give you an easy list of what tips go with what torch bodies, let alone what ones are listed as for use with Propane. Smith is one of the few that list a small "welding" style propane tip for example and then there is only one size available apparently..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Purox 300 handle and oxweld w17 handle are what I use. I have a few different heating tips for each, but primarily use a 100 size (cfh) propane sucker. I also switch that out with the cutting attachment on the w17 handle. With a heating tip as big as 100, I never use check valves on that torch. I was advised by a highly experienced torch and regulator repair man that using normal check valves would starve a heating tip that large.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8
Reply:i never done anything w/ propane besides a turbo torch,  but i take my glove off anytime i'm holding a rosebud, and hold it at the neck.  i wouldn't want china in my handLast edited by 123weld; 02-28-2016 at 02:50 AM.
Reply:I would go with the S series Smith, or currently Miller. I agree , I would not trust a chink regulator, especially on a rosebud. I would buy used USA, like Smith, Harris, victor or esab before new China crap.

Reply:I have had good luck with Harris torch bodies and rose bud torches.  I picked up a large selection of bodies, pipes and heads ranging from the size of a nickel up to around 1 1/2" and the longest pipe I have is around 3'.  I have ran them all on propane.  They are all older than dirt but work great. With victor rose buds I have had issues with them wanting to stay lit and back firing.  I may have not tried hard enough to make them work.Dan D.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:Harris makes a torch body with an on/off switch that I've seen several guys recommend, but I haven't been able to figure out what the model numbers are for the propane rosebuds. Would you have any of the model numbers for any of the smaller propane rosebuds Dan? I've thought about getting the Harris body instead of the Smith gas saver for heating parts for forging..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Personally I don’t like propane for heating. It works great for cutting, but it sure takes a long time for preheat. I’ll take acetylene over propane for heating any day. Reply:I have had good luck with purox torches both as cutting torches and running with rosebuds. My smaller rosebuds are just that and always dependable. I have wondered if I over bought on the larger ones as they can backfire and or blow out. It does not seem to make much difference whether it is the acetylene or propane version or how recently they have been cleaned. I find a full tank helps but not really sure why that should make much difference beyond the regulator.I second the caution about an unknown or cheap torch body. I would be more comfortable with a known used torch. Until you have had a real scare and a warning burn with a torch we can all be lax in our selection care and maintenance.
Reply:Real world.  Propane is the go-to for heating.  To get huge BTU's with Acetylene, you have to have multiple bottles that are manifolded.  Look up draw rate restrictions with Acetylene Most heating solutions are slow, and tedious.  Run it slow, and be careful not to overheat the metal, or over shrink the material."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:6-minutes to heat that little round stock with propane. With acetylene would have been done in under 2-minutes. Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Holy cow (Pun intended.) I just realized farmersamm has a web site! Pretty slick samm! Also noticed samm is still building things with a lincoln buzzbox. Better trade it in for a harbor freight welder,  I hear they are vastly superior.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8

Reply:Was a time I would have been pretty pleased with a smaller, cheaper, welder.  It was all about beginnings.  Same with a lot of people here.I learned lessons, made mistakes, and try to pass on the good things."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Harris the best we have around 20 on natural gas ,they make the best tips and buy a cutting atachment too .We cut with natural gas did 17 " thick.

Reply:Originally Posted by Mark's WeldingSorry but no that's not how you do that, and never use water you have to walk away and let it cool on its own for max shrinkage. Shouldn't restrain it either as it has not much to shrink without expansion. No wonder it takes several times for it to work for him.
Reply:Thanks to all for the input and recommendations. DSW's list of combo's was very helpful, and helped me decide to try a Victor setup. I've never used Propane for cutting, heating or bending, so I'm looking forward to the learning process.

Reply:In my opinion, Victor products, whether it be pro-star or the likes, is your best bet, since it is quality, it has a tried and true capabilities with propane. You can also readily go to most suppliers and they will deal in Victor products. I use propane at my home shop and it is great for cutting, and heating. I use a victor rosebud, made for acetylene however it works fine with propane, unless you want the maximized heating solution. That repairman was right about the check valves starving the tip. That is why scrap cutters never use check valves or f.b.a on their torches.VictorPraxairAir LiquideMillerLincoln Electric
Reply:I agree on the SMITH, Victor , and Harris. It doesn't cost that more to go first class and have piece of mind.
Reply:Really any American made torch will be fine. They are all good, and have their brand loyalty like trucks do.
