Would anyone in or near the north side of Houston be willing to spend a couple hours with me showing me your TIG skills?  I've been beating my Diversion 165 up but I'm not making any progress. I really felt like I could learn this on my own but I work really well with some initial instruction. I've watched gigs of video but I think I could use something more substantial. If I lived close to Zap I'd attend one of his sessions for sure. I'm sure this is weird and maybe a first on the forum. I'm willing to pay for your time. Feel free to pm me with questions or comments. Thanks for reading. Reply:chucke2009 is close to there I think maybe he can come over and make a vid of it or something.
Reply:Lanse is in Austin (about 2hrs from Houston) and I would think the appropriate thing to do would be for SpEd to make the trip to him if the lesson is free.SpEd, you can try contacting him thru a PM here or pay a visit to his YouTube channel or website (which I forget the specifics at the moment).MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Keep it coming guys, I'm not fat, I'm thick skinned too!  LOLI'm going to give this one last shot.  I'd like to open this up to other areas relatively near me.  If you are in the Houston, Dallas, or Austin area and think you would and could teach me some tig fundamentals with direct instruction, PM me.  Thanks everyone!Miller Diversion 165 TIGMillermatic 211/141 with Auto-SetHobart Stickmate LX235 AC/DC StickNorthern Tool 135 MIG & Dry Cut SawKlutch ST80i/ST200i Stick/TigGrizzly G9742 BandsawMilwaukee Circular Steel Saw/Portaband/SWAG Offroad Table
Reply:I've posted something on chucke2009 youtube page so hopefully he'll see it and be in contact.
Reply:Thanks leeroy86.  Chucke2009 has just under 12k in subscribers so I never would have asked myself.  I'm sure he's very busy running his business but you never can tell.  I appreciate the help.Miller Diversion 165 TIGMillermatic 211/141 with Auto-SetHobart Stickmate LX235 AC/DC StickNorthern Tool 135 MIG & Dry Cut SawKlutch ST80i/ST200i Stick/TigGrizzly G9742 BandsawMilwaukee Circular Steel Saw/Portaband/SWAG Offroad Table
Reply:No prob. Could you describe what kind of issues you're having? I wouldn't mind having a chat over the phone if that would help.
Reply:I understand the overall procedure, but I'm really having trouble knowing what kind and size of tungsten to use. Also setting amperage on various depths of steel is troubling to me. Is there a formula as a starting point?  What should I run for gas levels?  Cup size reasons?Just a couple of my issues. I have more in sure. Reply:Hi SpEd,Not to hijack your thread, but I am in the East Dallas area and would appreciate the same information of someone local willing to offer a beginner a few lessons for hire. I wanted to attend a 7 week class in Mesquite. but my little girl has ball games on Saturday mornings. If someone near me comes up in your thread, please feel free to PM me. Thanks and Good Luck

Reply:You can probably stick to 3/32 for most everything, just put a needle point on it if your going to do thinner stuff around 16 gauge, anything thinner and I would use 1/16 needle sharp. I hate to repeat what others have said because I'm sure you're frustrated but these answers are online in vids. As far as welder settings 1amp per thousandth is a pretty good rule just add 10-20 percent since you have a foot pedal. Ok for cups you can generally get away with a #7 for just about everything other than some thin stainless. If you haven't already I would invest in a gas lens setup and if you have a 17 style get a stubby kit for it. As far as argon flow unless you're doing an outside corner joint which can suck air in sometimes I can generally leave my flowmeter at 15cfh with a #6-8 gas lens. It really depends on what your doing and what kind of material and how thick or thin you're working with. Hopefully this helps a little.
Reply:That's good info leeroy86. I really appreciate your help. I'm working on 1/8" steel making some art projects. I had my gas at/around 20 cfh. I've purchased a gas lens but haven't installed it. I may have to take inventory of lenses and such to make sure I have what I need. I think I'm on the right track. I also think I need more time under my hood. That'll likely have the biggest impact. Reply:20 cfh should be good for a #5-7 on steel or aluminum I would I would sharpen the tungsten very sharp like it will draw blood very easily this will help focus and also start the arc also no more than a 1/4" stick out (distance from cup opening to sharp point of tungsten) and keep a fairly tight arc or at least try to. On that thickness unless you're fusing the joint try to use 1/16 filler metal. Practice makes perfect it's just another skill to learn. I would prob set the machine around 140 and just use the foot pedal from there I wouldn't worry too much about heat settings right now since you have a foot pedal just make sure you're melting the base metal but the 1 amp per thousandth should help you regarding that.Last edited by leeroy86; 03-08-2016 at 05:42 PM.
Reply:Inverters don't like pure tungsten. 2% langhanated is a good all-around choice. Not the only choice, but a good choice if you need to source tungsten.
Reply:I've been trying 2% thoriated and 2% ceriated.  Should I switch to the lanthanated?  I'm about to pick up a few things so that'd be good to know.  Thanks!Miller Diversion 165 TIGMillermatic 211/141 with Auto-SetHobart Stickmate LX235 AC/DC StickNorthern Tool 135 MIG & Dry Cut SawKlutch ST80i/ST200i Stick/TigGrizzly G9742 BandsawMilwaukee Circular Steel Saw/Portaband/SWAG Offroad Table
Reply:I think you're good with what you have, I have a dynasty all I run is 2% thoriated and 2% lanthanated I've never had a prob I like the thoriated better because I can just break it the length I want but other than that either one works.
Reply:I'll just use what I have for now then. I can pick up some lanthanated online should the need arise.  Then again the hobby 3 pack is $11 bucks for the 3/32 so I might as well pick up a sample.  Thanks!!Miller Diversion 165 TIGMillermatic 211/141 with Auto-SetHobart Stickmate LX235 AC/DC StickNorthern Tool 135 MIG & Dry Cut SawKlutch ST80i/ST200i Stick/TigGrizzly G9742 BandsawMilwaukee Circular Steel Saw/Portaband/SWAG Offroad Table
Reply:Im in Dallas and happy to share the little I know.  Its not worth driving from houston but if you happen to be passing thru or live here we can chat.  Gas lense, 8 cup, 3/32 gold tungsten, 1/16 filler, 1 amp per thou is what I Start with.  Maybe try some fuse welds to get the puddle and standoff and travel speed figured out.I'll most likely be in Arlington the weekend of July 14-16, attending a conference, and my buddy I'm seeing there lives in Cypress near Katy. I actually moved to Katy, intending to stay and live there but plans changed a little, so I was only there about two months. I might be able to see if I can go back down to Katy to hang out another day or so and I could stop by and show you some stuff. I could bring my welder too if you have a way to get to the dryer outlet for some 240V. It's a Kemppi MasterTIG 2300 MLS ACDC with the ADX panel and can do pretty much anything a tig machine can do, so we could run through all the different ways to run it. I know it's a few months out, but right I would still offer.
Reply:Very gracious of both of you. I'm hoping that with everyone's guidance here and a lot more time at the table that I can make progress. You guys rock. This place is awesome.
