Today I bought some tools from an elderly couple, including a set of drill bits. The bits don't all match, but some of them have a reddish-purple coating on them and are marked MAKITA HS USA. I'd never seen purple drill bits before, are they anything special or just junk?Lincoln 175HD

Reply:Those are the Designer Series, colored to match the curtains. Keeps the SWMBO pleased. On how many other forums did you post this same inquiry? That isn't a problem, it's just that when I ran a search on "Makita HS drill bits" the same posting popped up on at least three other forums!Member, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Yep, I posted it on a few forums because I'd never seen drill bits that color before. Google managed to index them the same night, surprised me.Lincoln 175HD
Reply:They may have been marketed as Cobalt bits, In reality they are probably a HSS bit with a "cobalt" surface coating.
Reply:I've got a few of those. they are pretty good bits, not sure of the composition, but they seem to be as durable as a good cobalt bit. Purple coating doesn't seem to do much other than make them stand out on the rack among the other bits.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools |
