When you guys feed your rod TIG welding, do you move your hand closer with each dip or do you push more rod from your hand?I have been just moving my hand closer until I can't any more and hopefullyI finished the weld by then.Watching Jody Tig in videos, he is able to move the road each dip. Which I find damn near impossible because it makes the end move all over. Granted he has more experience then I have years on this earth, should I not be doing it How I am?www.FirehouseFabricators.comZachLincoln 210mpLincoln SW200Hypertherm Powermax 45xp2x4 CNC Plasma Table.
Reply:It depends on what you are doing. But, generally you do want to keep the filler rod flowing through your hand. I find it fairly difficult to steady on open roots in pipe.Everyone interprets the feed in a different way, however; When i was in school, lots felt more secure gripping the rod to steady feed it without it "inch worming" through your hands. That there will get you only so far and only become the 2" welder. So yeah, i find it very important that you learn that hand manipulation- Pushing the rod. Only a couple videos that show the use of forefingers and thumb technique. I would try and find someone where you are welding to see how they are doing it.
Reply:My filler hand never moves towards the puddle at all..It's all in the FINGERS....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:BB,I usually start out holding the filler rod a foot or so back.   When it gets down close I back off the pedal and let the rod freeze to the puddle and slide my hand back and take another grip.  Then it's back down on the pedal and on with the weld.

Reply:I don't have Jody's coordination either. But I do move the filler rod through with my fingers. I tend to dip the way you probably do, by moving my hand forward, but then on the return trip so to speak, I advance the rod in between dips. So my hand moves back and forth a little bit, but it never really gets closer to the puddle.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:When approaching a tack or restart I twist my wrist a little further back then normal .  First introduction of filler is done by pivoting the hand.  The subsequent feeding is  carried on from wherever is comfortable without burning fingers.  Both hands are always supported by either a stretched finger, knuckle or lower palm.
Reply:I use magnetic levitation and The Force to advance TIG filler into the molten pool and my welds still can't compare to Weldermike's. "Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:after welding so much thicker aluminum, I dont even think about it, just happens naturally. I also do laywire on just about everything I weld, so its pretty easy to push rod in.
Reply:as per the zap school of tig welding i practiced the manipulation of filler rod through my fingers while watching the telly.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:Start welding more aluminum! It will make you get better at feeding the rod!there is many ways to hold the rod in ur finger.watch john marcellas feed it on you tube. Just type in his name and there's like 3 videos.  Feeding it with ur thumb works to if your moving fast
Reply:Motolife is right, practice on aluminum and you will pick up real fast how to giddy up and go. And no flame war either guys, but try it with no glove on your filler hand a few times and watch how quick you either stop real fast or start feedin that f'r real fast.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I was gona recommend that to mike but I didn't wanna get chewed out. Just remember bb a t joint style weld reflects the heat back at you real hot so you.  might wanna practice it with no gloves running flat beads. Don't think about it just do it!
Reply:Another reason tigging alum makes for a better all around tig weldor.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
