I have a couple gates to replace, they are made of 2x1 hollow section with 18ga sheet tacked on.Theyve rusted at the tack points as these areas seem to collect moisture and encourage rust. What is best way to attach sheets to prevent this in the future? The gates are 98x78", gonna build outer rectangle of same 2x1 but use 1" diagonals instead.Should sag less than original design.MM 180
Reply:The edges of the welds on the sheet are the most rust prone? No surprises there. The only cure is proper post-weld cleaning, priming and paint. Then refreshing the paint BEFORE rust is showing.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Reply:Do plan on living there forever ?? Do it all in stainless steel or aluminum.
Reply:I would screw colored tin on them. Colored tin usually has a 20 year warranty on the paint and if some one dented it, you could replace a piece very easily.
Reply:3M VHB tape would work well.http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3...s/3M-VHB-Tape/Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com |
