Got to build a extension for a trailer the other day. He needed it for hauling hay. There's a fair number of these around here since you can't get enough hay to make a full load without them. Most I see sag rather badly and worry me. I went to a good bit of trouble to try and keep that from happening on this one. I lot of my time was spend beefing up the bumper so that I was happy with it. I used the stake pockets for attachment 1. The tube goes down into them and then the bolt prevents them from being pulled out. The second attachment is harder to see. There's slots on the rear of this trailer for ramps to go into. I put 1/2" strap on the inside of the angle that goes in these slots. It's pretty much solid welded to the angle iron (beveled and a gap left to fill up then another bead with stick on the narrow side). On the bumper I inserted another tube inside it to strengthen the little extensions as well as added a gusset behind and redid the questionable welding overall. I made the brace where it hooks on top of the bumper and is bolted to prevent bouncing out. Also notice the brace to the angle up top to help prevent it from sagging down under load. The owner was super happy with it. He originally wanted me to weld it to the back of the trailer but I talked him out of it. I know he didn't want to tie up this trailer for hay use only.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Nice work! Welding it on would have required moving the lights too. Unless they changed the rules recently, you can add 5' of overhang without moving the lights as long as it's temporary.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:That's good to know. I wasn't sure about the lights and neither was he. It's 4' so he's within the 5' limit.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:Nice work, must be for hauling big squares?

Reply:Very nice work, looks a lot better built than most you see running around the country. Nice that it's detachable also. Some I have seen I make sure to pass as quickly as possible on the highway, pretty sketchy looking.

Reply:I've seen a lot of these around here. I never have heard of the guys being nailed for rear impact protection violations, but have always wondered about it. 393.86 requires the bumper to be within 12" of the rear of the vehicle I believe. http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations...section/393.86 It's either a gray area, or maybe a lot of the troopers turn a blind eye on farm related equipment, I don't know. Reply:My feeling is that this falls on the operator, not the fabricator. Ultimately the decision to modify the trailer is made by the owner."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:The ranchers around here run stuff that any one else would get thrown in jail for. I've seen stock trailers with the fenders wired on with bailing wire. I asked a DPS trooper how they could get away with it and he said "you don't mess with the food chain".
Reply:Great looking job as you always do Irish. I really learn a lot from you. Keep it up. Richey

Reply:Years ago I used to make detachable dovetails for flatbed type semi trailers which were removable. They would hook into the stake pockets of the trailer and clamp down to a weldment across the rear of the trailer, (usually DOT bumper) and could be removed by cranking "Bulldog" type trailer jacks leaving them free standing. A light bar across the back plugged in to the tailboad on the trailer. These worked well for loading/unloading machines where there was no dock available using a standard flatbed trailer. Used to get by with an eight foot ramp installed onto a 48' trailer without permits but never tried a 53', nor have any idea how it would fly nowadays.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
