Reply:Once you learn to run beads and weld 1/8 plate like Oscar said build yourself a welding table. It gave me tons of practice not only on welding joints but welding them in all sorts of positions. I even did overhead welding to tack my table top to my frame. One of the most important things no matter what metal your welding is FIT UP. Take the time and get the fit up as perfect as possible. Good luck!!!
Reply:Ironman metalworks - that is not a lay wire technique - just laying a few rods in a gap and weaving over them is not good technique. From your description that's what it sounds like you did, what was your non-torch hand doing?Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:Is my eye site going? I thought the OP was asking about learning to weld stainless? A 1" thick stainless table is going to be some kind of money.

Reply:Hey Minnesota Dave, in reference to your question, my non torch hand was shoving the rod into the gap as fast as I needed to keep from undercutting. I was running a good bit of amps and moving fast. I had to put 2 and 3 rods together to keep enough metal in the joint which had beveled edges. It worked great. Made great penetration, no under cut and flat good looking welds. Dipping very quickly with multiple rods seemed to be a unneeded hassle. This also allowed me to keep the over all applied heat to a minimum. I kinda miss spoke. I did lay the rods in to start but the 230 amps instantly ate them up and I had to keep pushing in rod while weaving back and forth.  I was moving but made sure I got good bite into the base metal. I was using 5/32 tungsten.
