So I scored a NOS Miller Maxstar 91 at an auction when a local Miller rep went out of business. I don't know much about tig in general, but figured I could give it a shot for the price. The machine came with the manual and the dense connectors for cables, but no cables or torch (I believe this was made in 97?). I ordered a torch that has a manual gas valve with an external line to the tank, but other than that I just don't what all I need or what I should be spending money on. My main questions are:What gas should I be running?What flow should the gas be set up at?Is a pedal set up necessary for the machine? Should I be looking for a HF box? If so, what box should I try to get? What should I expect from this machine? Most of the stuff I do is fabrication for my Jeep. Rollcages, skidplates, link brackets, etc. Will this machine be able to help with that? I found somewhere that it should be capable of 1/8" steel, is that a safe assumption?Thanks,Matt
Reply:I don't know anything about those machines but you should be using argon for a shielding gas. CFH will depend on what you are welding, 10-20CFH is common. Foot pedal is recommended for any machine that can use one, but isn't required on most machines. You will have to research to find out if you can operate without one. If the Maxstar is like the newer models (I have one) then it is a DC only machine, high frequency is nice to have but not usually required.I just read a little about the machine, looks like max amperage is 90. That is a bit low for 1/8" steel but its do-able, joint type will be a factor in that.
