Reply:Fosdick, Johansson and American all made very heavy duty drill presses.  The bad news is they are all out of business.  If you watch Ebay good deals can be had for very little money.  There is nothing wrong with a used industrial machine.  Find one with gear drive, morris taper quill, a cast iron table, maybe even a power feed.  The down side is all of the real good machines will probably be three phase.  Do not let that scare you away.  Phase converters are very easy to build and the new digital VFDs on the market will turn single phase to three phase.Dan
Reply:$1,500-$2,000  A friend of mine has been talking about Baileigh?  Anyone have any experience with this particular brand of drill presses? I think they only carry a few models.
Reply:Clausing, Johannsen (sp check), old Delta stuff, Buffalo, anything old and HEAVY. Check the runout before you buy.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:What will be the primary type of work you'll be doing with it?  High precision, back yard fab?  I have a 17 ish Jet, and it works pretty well for me.  New, its around $700 or so, if I recall correctly.  -AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup

Reply:Powermatic, Ellis,  Rockwell,Boice Crane are around on Ebay some in single phase but Dealers Electric in Hillside NJ sells vfd which work well and makes them all variable speed.
Reply:Another question, how long of a throw do you want? Oldskull beat me to it. For $1500-2000 you could easily get an old Bridgeport mill. This would give you milling capabilities as well as a heavy duty drill press. Only drawback is that it wont have as long of a throw as a built for purpose drill press. I would much rather have an old J-head then a drill press though. They are truly heavy duty.
