I bought a new Lincoln, Port-a-torch about 5 years ago. Had the tanks filled and have not used it at all. The whole set up has been sitting on a shelf in my garage for 5 years. I don't want to use these tanks if they might explode on me. I have only used a torch years ago and bought this thing to learn on. So I am asking because I don't know. Rather look stupid than get hurt. Thanks in advance.

Reply:I used actylene that was 20 years old. It was sitting inside a body shop friend bought.
Reply:as long as the tanks are in good condition, not rotted or damaged valves they are good to use, if you seen some of the early dates on the tanks from the welding supply it amazes you how long they are good for, also as long as they have pressure in them theres no chance of moister getting in from an open valve and causing internal rust or rot like a air compressor tank.Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:I have a pair of oxy-acetylene tanks out in my shop that were filled nearly 14 years ago and they still have pressure and the regulators still work. Of course, I won't be able to refill them without paying for a pressure test, but the gas is still good and still makes a good fire.
Reply:The gas is usable till the tanks rot away.Under normal conditions, probably hundreds of years.

Reply:I had an AC4 acetylene cylinder I'm fairly certain was retrieved from the Titanic. I used it up and traded it in for a new one. |
