Building a small first table and before I go any further I wanted to ask you guys here.  My original plan was 2x2 square tube for the legs, but I have a bunch of this 4x4 angle still and figured I could use that for legs.  Just add base plates to the bottom for casters.  Would you go with the square tube or would the angle by fine?May next question would be, if using the angle for legs would I be better off mounting them on the outside corners or inside corners?
Reply:How big will the table be, and how thick?   The angle should be sufficient especially if you tie the bottom of the legs together.  I see no practical difference  of inside or outside mounting.
Reply:I would use the angle since you have it. Steel is not cheap and I always try to use up what I have in stock. Beefy legs look better to me then 2x2 tube for sure. Inside /  outside, I think inside would look cleaner but it's what you like. You could cut base plates from the angle too .

Reply:Table will be roughly 28x48.  6" wide flat stock slabs for the top.  3/8" thick.  Either method I planned on tying in the legs.  I've had this heavy angle for probably 18 years.  Just a bunch of 4' touched off pieces that were giving to me.
Reply:18 years, wow. The stock shown looked like it is almost new. I wish my older stock looked half that nice..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Its been in the shed.  My uncle and cousin are both iron workers and gave it to me when I first got into welding.  Of course all I had at the time was a 110V clarke, so not much was ever done with it LOL.

While I'm all for saving money by using existing steel, many times I'd rather save extra pieces of expensive steel for other uses in the future and simply buy cheaper stock that is just as usable for the job. I have a very small supply of large angle on hand since it's so expensive. Thin wall square tube is relatively inexpensive though, so I often have extras of that, or if I need to, I won't hesitate to buy some if I need it for a job. Small angle is even cheaper and easier to locate used.Storage space is always a consideration. If I lacked storage space, that would change things some.

Reply:Got the legs cut and on.  I'll tie the legs in next as well as leveling up the bottoms and getting base plate on.
